Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have now been taking metformin 500mg with every meal since I was diagnosed with Type2 just about one week ago now. I am experiencing the symptoms of severe eczema with terrible bodily itching which can in some cases lead to bleeding. Is there anyone else who is experiencing such an allergic reaction to this drug and can I ask how you dealt with it?

I'm surprised you have been told to take it straight away with every meal Alby 😱 Normally, you build up to the full dose over a period of weeks. I wonder if it's been such a shock to your system that it's caused this reaction? Definitely something to ask your GP or nurse about. Does it mention anything of this nature on the patient leaflet that comes with the pills?
 
Rashes are a very rare side effect of metformin. I developed a rash over my lower legs last Sunday, went to drs to get it checked. Dr said mine was unlikely to be a reaction to metformin as I've been taking it since September last year. She gave me a strong antihistamine to take and to go for blood tests if it doesn't improve.
 
Hello Stitch147, thanks for the info. My trouble is not so much with rashes but more with terrible general itching all over my body. I had childhood eczema so I know what a misery this can be. Metformin can cause allergic reactions but apparently dermatological are very rare.
 
Dr said they were rare. Might be worth having a chat with your Dr just in case something in them has triggered your eczema.
 
I've heard that use of a heat source (hot bath, hot shower, heat lamp, whatever) can give temporary itch relief by getting rid of the proteins which cause the itch. Probably not heat spray, however, as this is likely to make an itch worse (and you don't want to be breathing that stuff)...
 
Thanks for your help and I shall bear what you in mind when I next consult my GP.
 
I have type 2 diabetes, l also get itching on my upper back and my scalp, l put this down to taking station tablets
 
Hi, my itching is due to being allergic to metformin tablets and I have had to come off them and use diet alone to control my diabetes. I do not know what station tablets are but I hope things improve for you!
