Can anyone help? I know there are quite a few people who have discussed gastroparesis on here , ive had diabetes 35 years and for the last 6 weeks having been having terrible trouble , up all night trying to open bowels but only going a tiny amount every time , severe stomach pain on the left hand side , nausea , not eating , lost nearly a stone in weight , awful tiredness . Can anyone who suffers with it tell me if this could be what I've got , I've been to gp this morning but because I am seeing diabetic consultant in 3 weeks thinks it would be left till then

Hi Jennywren I'm so sorry to hear that you are feeling like this. I really think that you need to phone your GP or 111 as soon as possible. I could be wrong but it sounds more long a bowel problem to me than gastroparesis. I have Gastroparesis and it affects my upper stomach, causing pain and bloating in the upper stomach along with nausea/ vomiting. It causes BGs to be very erratic because injecting a standard bolus does not match with the slow absorption of food. Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions but if I had what you are describing I would be seeing the doctor now. please let us know how you get on.

Err - it's a 'stomach emptying' and 'transit time' problem, not to do with actually 'going' as far as I know?

I really don't think you should leave it even 3 weeks with those symptoms and in pain Jenny - I truly don't!

Glad Amanda has said the same - get medical advice pronto!

Been to gp this morning he gave me some opening medicine and said if pain gets worse go to a+ e

Jenny I am VERY unimpressed with your GP. He should be finding out why you have the problem. I've been having lower stomach spasms and other lowee stomach pain plus bowel problems. It has been worsening and was starting to worry both me and my mum a lot. I saw my GP and she has given me medication and arranged an ultrasound and referred me to a gastroenterologist. She was also going to do blood tests but didn't because they were up-to-date. Your GP should be taking a similar approach with you. Please don't be fobbed off by the GP. Is there another GP that you can see?

Jenny, sorry to hear about your symptoms, and even more sorry that your GP has fobbed you off because you have diabetes and it's the easy option for him to assume your symptoms are somehow connected. Without wishing to be alarmist, I really think you need to get another opinion and insist on an urgent referral to a gastroenterologist. Your symptoms may in fact resolve and turn out not to be serious (I hope so), but there is the possibility that they indicate a serious inflammatory bowel condition or even cancer, and obviously in these situations you don't want to waste time. xx

I completely agree with Redkite. A GP fobbed my mum off for several years. She was in agony and very scared. Eventually she had to have emergency bowel surgery and part of her bowel removed because of diverticula r disease. The surgery would have been prevented if the GP had treated my mum appropriately with medication at the appropriate time.

Sometimes the GP is not good at picking things up. I was backwards and forwards to mine because I was getting lots of loose ones. When I was in hospital they did all kinds of things, and tests and said my system couldn't tolerate metformin. Now that is sorted I have the odd day when things are not good, but it took the hospital to spot the link between metformin and constant toilet trips. It is good you went to see the GP and you do have A&E if things don't improve.

Totally unrelated I have been for a scan this afternoon and have fibroids , maybe they could be pressing on bowel ? Will find out at appt tomorrow
