Hi,
I have been been on insulin for just over four years after being misdiagnosed with type 2 for a year before. I have a nearly two year old son and with him also came an over active thyroid, which was removed in June.
I have awful sugars because of it and the docs are still sorting out me thyroid meds, can not lose weight!
Any advice greatfully received.

Hi Louise, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your misdiagnosis, and the problems with your thyroid :( What insulin regime are you on? What treatment or advice have you been given by your doctor about how you might better manage your condition? I'm afraid I don't personally know much about thyroid problems, but hopefully some of our other members will be able to help.

Hi, thanks for replying. I am on 31 units of levemir and 1/8 ratio of novo rapid. I am due to see the consultant on Thursday, but in previous years he has said that I need to get it down, and sent me off to see the nurse with no real help given. They have suggested a pump, but there is a 12 month waiting list!

Not very helpful from the consultant! :( Do you use the same ratio for all meals? Many people find that they need a different ratio at different times of the day. Do you test before eating, then one or two hours after to see if there is any 'spike' in your levels? What are your waking levels like? Sorry for all the questions!

Yep I use different ratios for lunch, normally 1/10, waking levels can be from 5-12, have no idea why so different?! I test a lot at the moment so I can give myself a correction dose.

People tend to be more insulin resistant in the mornings, then become more sensitive as the day progresses and they become more active - I'm definitely like that, I need as much insulin for a slice of toast in the morning as I do for a full meal in the evening! 😱 I also find that injecting at least 15 minutes before eating helps to reduce any post meal spikes 🙂 If you don't already have one I'd recommend getting a copy of
Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas - it's a really useful reference (whatever your age!) that covers everything and might help fill in the bits your consultant and nurse are obviously leaving out! 🙂
