Hi peeps. its been a long time since I took this seriously but now ive started the LCHF woe to reduce BG and to loose weight. the only problem is ive started having hypos and dont want to talk to my GP and try to justify my diet choices. my BG levels have been great. :confused:but i need advise on reducing my insulin. im on 34u twice daily and am now worried and feeling ill. any advise would be very welcome. Julie

Hi Julie, nice to hear from you again 🙂 Great that you are finding success with the LCHF diet and that it is largely bringing your levels under control. However, as you are discovering, you need less insulin as you are now consuming fewer carbs.

I would suggest going further than just trying to adjust your insulin - I would request a change to a different insulin regime. Adjusting a mixed insulin is not easy, as you will be reducing the slower-acting constituent at the same time as the faster-acting constituent that deals with the cartbs in your meals. Moving to a 'basal/bolus' regime, also known as MDI (Multiple Daily Injections) will give you much more flexibility with your food choices. This regime uses a slow-acting 'basal' insulin which deals with your background levels of glucose constantly being trickled out by your liver, and a fast-acting 'bolus' insulin which is used to cover the carbs in your meals.

Do NOT be afraid to approach your GP about this - it is your health, your choice, and your quality of life - if you believe you have found a diet which helps you maintain good control (and one which has many adherents!) then they need to accept this and help you with any problems that come along with it. The LCHF diet is not a 'fad' diet, but one that has been found to work extremely well for many people worldwide.

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to offer medical advice, so I can't tell you how you need to adjust your doses, only a healthcare professional who knows your full medical history can do that.

Looking back, I see that sometime ago you were suggesting that you might be Type 1.5 - did anything come of that?

Please don't be afraid to approach your GP or nurse. Different insulin regimes exist for the simple but important reason that there is no single regime that suits everyone, and your GP needs to consider your needs and not dictate them. Please book an appointment, and let us know how it goes, and good luck 🙂

Hi, knowledge is king ! Your GP is there to help but I know what you mean when you don't want to tell them every thing. Have a look on web. Duk S/land meet every few weeks & have some very good speakers on. A nice bunch !

Thanks for replys. I will make an appointment with my Gp. Yes your suggested insulin regime sounds a good plan. I will also visit the group in Sunderland. As for my type of diabetes.... Dr says type 2 with no other investigations. ....I will keep asking and see if I get anywhere. Thanks again to both of you. Julie

Hmm...Well, as long as you get the appropriate treatment then Type is less important, but there's always an underlying assumption by a lot of healthcare professionals (completely unfairly) that Type 2s can solve all their problems if only they'd try a bit harder - something that really gets my goat! 😡

Get yourself on MDI, don't take no for an answer! Good luck, let us know how you get on 🙂

People respond differently with diabetes - it's a lifestyle-affecting metabolic disorder and you have to find what works best for you.

Not everyone wants to be on MDI and would rather control what they eat - just not everyone on here!

I will also continue to point out that HFLC could have other effects on metabolism, and is not yet approved by ANY reputable scientific organisation for long-term use - although in the short term there is significant weight loss. (I expect many more arguers now!)

Welcome to the forum, Julie R. What is HFLC? Oh, got it! High fat low carb.

Safety is the most important aspect and if you are having regular hypos you need to reduce your insulin. You need an urgent appointment, if you are not feeling confident enough to reduce it yourself. Great news that LCHF is working for you x
