Unless I am mistaken and before I rush in and do anything reckless I just need to check that St. Swithin's Day is the official day to change my lancet regardless of if it needs changing or not.

Confirmation eagerly awaited 😉

Ooh, It's today! I'd completely forgotten. ( rushes off to dig out pack of lancets from bottom of dusty drawer)

No wonder the NHS is so strapped for cash, with us changing lancets every year! 😱 I'm nearly halfway through the box I got after diagnosis 7 years ago. I'd better write myself a note to remember to re-order some in 2022 so I don't find myself in the awful situation of running out! 😉

And to think I was 'clunk, clicking every prick' until I read the lancet changing realities on here! :D

I'm not brave enough to go months but I'll stretch it to a week now and hang the expense!
According to today's papers, we Type 2 are singlehandedly bringing the Govt. health budget down with our errant ways! Grrrrr

Likewise but I've found it very easy to slip into bad ways

The deed is done :D I'm up and running with a brand new lancet- well it's been in the box for a few years - and am looking forward to a trouble free finger pricking 12 months ahead!

Thought it would be appropriate to re-post my poem...

The Lament of the Lonely Lancet

One of the forum’s members related the unusual tale of trying to inject her small daughter, but no insulin was being delivered. She changed the insulin – no luck, changed the pen, no luck – then realised it was because the needle had no hole! Clearly a lancet who had been frightened by the folk tales of other lancets who told him that lancets rarely get changed – not at all like the official ‘single-use’ line he had been taught – and perhaps that’s how he ended up in a needle box…

Congratulations lancets all! You’ve all achieved a pass,
And now it’s time for you to leave the Lancing Duties class!
So follow me, you’ll be assigned to boxes at the gate –
Just keep in line and you’ll be fine, don’t push, not long to wait!

‘I’m scared, I’m not sure I should go, for though I passed the course,
And though I’d only do it once – could I draw blood by force?’
‘Just once? You’re joking! You’ll find out it’s six times every day,
And every day for several weeks before you’re thrown away!’

‘Are you sure? How awful! I think I may hang back
And lurk here in the shadows – they won’t miss one in a pack…
I’ll mingle with the needles, for surely they’re used less
And don’t conclude their useful life a blunt and bloodied mess!’

‘Oh my! I’ve been selected after months within this box,
In the darkness of this drawer with the underpants and socks!
It’s up to me to do my best and pierce this person’s skin
And deliver up a dialled dose of clean fresh insulin!’

Oh no! But wait! But it’s too late, I didn’t think this through!
I have no hole! It can’t get out! Whatever shall I do?
If only I’d stuck to my task, I’d surely have succeeded –
A lancet’s not a needle, for a needle’s hole is needed! 😱 :D

This is probably a newbie question, but am I being daft in changing the lancet every time I prick myself for my glucose tests?

Not daft at all, it's just that a lot of people have developed the habit of not changing them very often (I'm guilty of it! 😱)

No you're not daft - lots of naughty peeps on here have got into bad habits 😉. It's actually recommended to use a new lancet each time you prick. Have you ever seen a photo of a used needle under the microscope? 😱

On another note, if today is St Swithin's day, doesn't that mean we'll have this dull weather all summer?

:D:D Will have to find the box somewhere.

Oh that's got me worried Redkite...I must get back to changing lancets at least daily. My immune system couldn't handle whatever's on that used needle! 😱

You are doing the right thing changing your lancet each time Worcester_Matt, I am being very lazy by not bothering to change my lancet very often.

It took me just a few seconds today and the good thing is I've had to reduce the depth setting from rhinoceros hide to standard leather. Good result 😉

I'm nowhere near as "hard" as most if I don't change it daily I get sore fingers (yes I'm a wuss but I've got nice fingers, and as it happens ruby slipper nail polish 😛)

You all change your lancet at least once a year😱:D That seems excessive:D

Thanks for the reminder, I'll away and do it now.

LOL you lot...

We're in the middle, understand why you are supposed to change the lancet every time but can also see why it seems wasteful to some people! So we usually change it once a day, although just lately seem to be slipping into once every 2-3 days 😱 So thanks for the reminder, I shall change it first thing in the morning!

That sounds like a good plan, Sally. I change them about a week after my brain registers that my fingers are sore...not a good plan.🙄
