Halle Berry has explained the effect having type 2 diabetes has had on her life.

The 48-year-old actress is mother to seven-year-old daughter Nahla and son Maceo, 19 months. Halle was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when she was 19 which has made her learn a lot about her diet, wisdom she wants to impart to her children too.

"When I found out, I was like, 'Oh my God, I have a disease.' I was terrified. But I'm healthier since the diagnosis, and I think it has made me a better mom, because I'm so aware of how much sugar we consume. I've very conscious of what my children eat and how much they take in. People think it's hard to cut out sugar, but it can be done. You just have to put some effort in," she told British magazine Marie Claire.

Erm, it's not just about sugar Halle 🙄

Let's just cast our minds back to when it first hit the news years ago - she said she used to have it but had been cured, ISTR ......

Well there was a bit of a backlash wasn't there? They reported type 1 and insulin dependent and then she said she didn't have to take insulin anymore, and now she says type 2. Confusing! 19 would be young for type 2 even with risk related to ethnic origin. I wonder if she has MODY?

She certainly flies in the face of stereotypical Type 2 diagnoses. I remember reading about how she came to be diagnosed, and it did sound more like a Type 1 onset - quite rapid and severe. Maybe she's like me, but recovered much more beta cell function? At one time I scoffed at her 'weaning herself off insulin', but now I'm a bit more open-minded. My consultant says I'm definitely not Type 2, yet I'm clearly not your ornery Type 1

Hadn't realised she was so young at diagnosis - this means that she has had it for nearly 30 years. I wonder if she has ahd any problems with complications, and what her HbA1c has been like?

Sounds like she's jumping on the 'sugar is bad' bandwagon. You have to remember she lives in Hollywood - she's probably gluten-free too out of choice, and vegan, etc etc. It's called 'fashion'! :D

I had an idea that she actually had what is/was called Tiger diabetes - only affects those with African heritage, presents as T1 on diagnosis but then once under control is actually T2. (I'm sure I read that somewhere, but you never know with the internet...)
