Feeling a bit at a loss as I have my BG levels around 5.0 to 5.5 before meals and around 6.0 to 7.0 two hours after meals. HbA1c is now 5.4, so going in the right direction except for my first reading in the morning before breakfast. I think it is dawn phenomenon as they are between 6.0 and 7.0 first thing most days and yesterday was 8.0 Eek! (There was no apparent reason as it was 6.2 before I went to bed and I did not eat or drink anything else.) Two hours later, after a boiled egg and toast and tea it was down to 6.2 again. Will these readings make my HbA1c test higher next time and are these readings in the morning significant? Is there anything that I can do to fix this?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about those sorts of levels, they are pretty good and given that the rest of your day is excellent I wouldn't have thought it would have any noticeable impact on your longer term HbA1c. 5.4% is excellent 🙂 Your levels may rise slightly overnight due to the activity of your liver and the body's natural rhythms. Do you test immediately on waking?

A change overnight of approx. 2 (either way) is pretty normal really (well to be exact, I think it's actually 1.7) but I wouldn't worry.

The A1c reflects how much glucose has stuck to your haemoglobin in the past 12-ish weeks so unless you were at a higher level for quite a chunk of that time, no it won't have much of an influence at all on your otherwise pretty good results.

If say (assuming you test fairly frequently) your meter average was 8, you'd expect an A1c to say 7-ish (in old money, I can't relate to new measurements LOL) - so frankly - I wouldn't worry!

Thank you both for taking the time to reply to me, I really appreciate it. I am coming up to annual review time, my first, so getting a bit anxious. A bit of me hopes that they will forget about me. As you may know I am trying very hard to stave off the time when I need medication to control this condition. Dr and DSN are really keen to put me on it and have said that if things do not improve that is what will happen. I have blood test tomorrow for thyroid problems so not looking forward to that either. I'll take your advice and try not to worry. 🙂

I think you're doing great and you shouldn't worry at all 🙂. Those readings are "normoglycaemia" ie. what a person without diabetes would achieve. Be proud of yourself!

I can't see any reason why they would want to put you on medication at those levels happydog 🙂 Good luck with the review!

Totally agree. Your HbA1c is spot on and so are your BG levels.

You are doing extremely well.

Andy 🙂

Thank you Redkite, Andy and Northerner for your encouragement. Unfortunately my surgery sees diabetes = medication and that is that. I have been warned that I am damaging my health by trying to control it with D&E. No one there has said well done, just we wish you would take the medication and look after yourself properly. One of my friends who tried to change to a different surgery now has no doctor as the prospective surgery said they have no space and her old one said you did not want us to treat you so we gave your space to someone else. Hence I will just go there as little as possible and carry on. Thanks again for your support. 🙂

What a terrible way to treat patients :( Of course you are not damaging your health by keeping your levels well-controlled enough to avoid the need for medication, what utter nonsense! 🙄 Such a shame that they can't be more encouraging, and more up to date and knowledgeable about the conditions they purport to treat :(

I'd disagree that your levels are "normoglycaemia" but they are excellent!

If it is the dawn effect, then I've read that there are techniques you can try such as eating a non-carb snack just before bed. I seem to recall that a web writer called David Mendoza had some ideas (try a google search). But given your HbA1c it's probably not something that is critical.

Thank you Mark T. I will give it a try. You are all so very helpful and kind 🙂

Well done "HAPPY DOG" Those results are good ! I have a friend who is T2 or WAS ! he is now off the books & not on meds anymore. He was in the army & walks his dogs legs off. Pleased for him 🙂
