Hi Rosie, that's not a bad result at all for a first test! 🙂 I would recommend having a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to get a good idea of how to test efficiently so that you get the most out of your test strips. Basically, the best times to test are:

On waking/before breakfast (also known as your 'fasting' reading.

Before meals

One or two hours after meals

By testing in this way you will find out how your meals are affecting you (you need to know the 'before' value so that you can see how much it has risen when you test afterwards). Most meals will start to digest fairly quickly, if they contain carbs, and so your blood sugar levels will 'peak' at around 1-2 hours after eating. If the peak is too high then you know you will need to think carefully about what you just ate and how you might be able to improve it, perhaps by reducing/replacing some of the carbs.

Please ask if you are unsure about anything! Which meter have you got?

I would say a touch high, though its better than some can achieve at the moment, call it work in progress. 🙂

NICE guide lines say you should be under 8.5, 2 hours after eating, though a lot of people will strive to achieve less than the 8.5 as its reckoned the nice guide lines are set a bit to high.

Well done, at this point anything under 10 is a great result, just don't eat too many carbs in your next meal. Things will get better when you've seen your dietician - just hope they are clued up.

No worries rosie, hopefully as you come to understand things better you'll feel more confident about things. There's always someone here if you need some company 🙂
