Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Oooooh, how very interesting. Seemingly the Daily Mail is going into detail about the different types of diabetes, its causes etc. I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but Theresa is very high profile and tipped for the top, therefore we could see a change in the way diabetes is perceived and treated. Maybe, just maybe.

PS: shame she's not the Health Secretary!

The report certainly highlights the way people will jump to the wrong conclusions about people - her rapid weight loss was cynically suggested to be her trying to 'makeover' her image in preparation for a bid to replace Cameron... :(

With the knowledge that she has been diagnosed since November, I admire the way she has coped so well in the public eye whilst dealing with a new diagnosis.

I read somewhere overnight that she was initially diagnosed as type 2 but only reclassified as type 1 two months ago. Typical again, diagnosed simply on the fact of age, not proper tests until recently.

Also, the first thing that struck me was that if she is "only having to inject twice a day" then she isn't receiving the best possible care then is she? Would be very interesting to know what regime she is on, whether she has had a hypo yet, whether she has informed the DVLA etc etc.

Let's hope that someone so high profile will change perception/push through changes/raise the profile etc. Or will she slowly slip down the ranks?

Wonder if she will still feel so positive in a year/two years/five years/ten years?

Hmmmmm!

I suspect that, given her position and ambitions, she may be one of those people who hardly mentions it as it may suggest that it is something to be concerned about and therefore affect her career. I may be doing her a big disservice, of course, I know there are other politicians with diabetes, including Type 1 (Adrian Sanders is Type 1, I believe, and Keith Vaz is Type 2).

It would be great if she injected or reached for the jelly babies during PM questions!

Although I have sympathy for her as this condition is not one that I would wish on even my worst enemy, it could help in making people more aware of what diabetes is. Wouldn't it be great if all diabetics got a better press and the general public were more knowledgeable? I knew very little before last September. This forum has been a life saver for me and I will always be indebted to the kind and lovely people here who help me, I don't think that I can ever thank all of you enough. She should join, we all need each other. 🙂

Re reaching for the jelly babies it must be twice as hard for her because if her sugar goes low and she starts talking nonsense no one would notice any difference 😱

I am surprised about what I read in the paper today re it being her shocking illness!!!!

A couple of people I know said if they didn't know what I had to do in a day, they would have little sympathy for her so I hope it highlights diabetes seeing as emmerdale & hollyoaks is doing a poor job.

Re the jelly babies comment, I agree she speaks utter b******s on a good day & that's before a hypo.

I hope she has told the dvla otherwise all the police officers she has upset will be out to get her.

But good luck to her with it all

On BBC Breakfast this morning they were discussing Type 1 and Type 2. Main bit of misinformation was that people on insulin can't miss a meal. Erm, depends what insulin regime you are on. I would imagine that the vast majority of Type 1s are on MDI or pumps, not mixes, so missing a meal is fine 🙄
