But metronidazole is the right antibiotic for dental infections (as well as amoebic dysentery, speaking from personal experience), so take them! Avoid alchohol (not that you'll feel like drinking, I guess), but to make it easier to take big capsules, stand up or sit up straight, drink some water (or other non alcoholic liquid) to wet your throat, then swallow one at a time, washing each one down with lots of liquid.

Avoid alcohol mouthwashes, as Pumper_Sue says, but salt mouthwashes are OK, if you want to try swilling round mouth, then spitting out.

Once antibiotics begin to take effect on infection, you will begin to feel less queasy, so do persist.

Corsodyl mouthwash is fab, it contains chlorhexidine which is a good topical antiseptic / antimicrobial.

If you do try it go for the mint flavour, the original is minging!

I expect there are cheaper generic versions available from chemists

Glad you mentioned mouthwash as I bought some yesterday and just took a look at the back and it does say it contains alcohol .. Would that really have a reaction with the tablets as you don't swallow it .

According to my GP yes.

Won't be using that for a week then , my breath will have to stink lol

Hi DarrenW,

You have my sympathies!:( I also have an infection in my gum - they took an x-ray and it is along the whole side of one gum so have been given Metronidazole and Erythromycin to take for a week. I also feel queasy and not with it and really tired - and it doesnt help we moved house 3 days ago! My stomach feels delicate and not enjoying any food or sleeping well - been taking painkillers every few hours but still in pain. Apparently I have a tooth that is dying off so will need it taking out in a couple of weeks - just hoping the infection has cleared by then. I hope you feel better soon - I was told it takes a few days to feel any benefit and also do NOT have any alcohol as others have said with the first antibiotic as it can be dangerous and just not worth it so dont be tempted.🙂Bev

Believe me bev the thought of having a beer couldn't be further from my mind ...the other antibiotic I'm taking is called augmentin 625 mg . My stomach is paying the price but for some reason I have no toothache at all just a face that looks like I've been in the ring . I also am exhausted all the time . I slept in till 1:30 today when my dad called , if he hadn't I probably of slept the day threw

Oh Darren, I am so sorry you are feeling so bad. All you can do is try and rest and keep taking the pain killers and antibiotics. I had an absess in a tooth last year. I was almost banging my head on a wall it was so bad. These things always seem to happen on a weekend.

At least the call is free - but you might get a hot ear!

I dont think the 111 number is Free. I called the Police on their 101 number from my BT landline (free all day and week-ends) and was charged. Hope Im wrong.

I spend much of my working time ringing GP practices, and lots of them have messages on their machines saying calls to 111 from both landlines and mobiles are free.

SNAP ...got an abscess going on too...:( 1st dentist appointment (NHS are very rare around here) is july 3rd 🙄. so saw GP who gave me antibios amoxicillin for a week then a low level till i see dentist. 3 days on didnt need painkiller this morning but certainly need them tonight.
hope yours is sorted soon
