Just talked to my doctor and he is putting me on Naproxen for the pain and Zantac for the side effects. I hope it helps as the amount of pain I have is increasing and getting about is a real trial to me. I'm also moving from one stick to two. What joy!

Is anyone else taking either of these drugs and how do you get on with them?

Hi Alison
I have been taking Naproxen for the last few weeks - i slipped a disc in my back and trapped a nerve (genius manouvre!!)

Doc told me its more of an anti-inflamatory rather than for the pain - they gave me solpadol for that.

However, i was fine taking it, no side effects at all that i could tell.

Hope it agrees with you, and helps with the pain.

xx

I'm afraid I can't help with the meds but I just wanted to say I hope they help with the pain & quickly. All the best! Xx

That's me all over, no speaky English properly! 😱 The doctor is hoping that by reducing the inflammation in my hips and knees, the pain will also be reduced.

I tried naproxen for the pain I have in my hips, never worked for me 😎

Hope it works for you 🙂

Sorry to hear that you are in so much pain. I hope that the medication works well for you.

Just made my first trip out with the two sticks. All went well till I got to the shop when I realised I had no spare hands for the basket  (they have wheelie baskets but no trolleys). One of the assistants came to my rescue and carried the basket for me, bless him. 😎

When I was on two crutches I put the basket on the floor and pushed it around with the sticks! I got loads of offers of help, but they didn't realise what a big thrill it was for me at the time to get out of the house and browse the shelves :D

Another aid I've been given is an adjustable tray table. I've been finding I'm most comfortable sitting up in bed with my legs out straight and my back supported, I even sleep this way sometimes. But that doesn't make using a laptop very easy. Hence the table, it's brill, it has a lid that can be raised to hold a book or the lappy (with a pierced design in it so air can get to the beast). I'm so much more comfortable now. I may never move from this spot again! :D

Just a suggestion, hubby did the expert patients pain management course a couple of years ago. It gave him a few things to try like relaxation and visualisation techniques which seem to help.

Hope tablets relieve pain for you

Perhaps worth talking to a pharmacist about best strategies to take medications eg timing - often best to take before getting out of bed, so leave a drink and some food beside bed - eat, then take tablets, so you'll be taking them on a full stomach, sit up and wash down with plenty of fluid, so reducing chance of irritation in oesophagus etc. Zantac does protect stomach, but so does food, washing down with plenty of water etc.

Excellent idea, I'll speak to the pharmacist when I pick up the prescription. Sadly, although there is a pain management group that meets one evening a month, it's not in a place I can get to since I don't drive and the buses in my part of town stop at 6pm. I can't usually eat first thing as I feel too sick, but I'll try.

Are there any voluntary groups locally who could help with transport to/from the group?

I can't help on the meds front but I hope they work for you 🙂

Not in the evenings unfortunately, only during the day.

Hi Alison, sorry to hear you are in so much pain.
I was prescribed Naproxen in stead of diclofenac, but unfortunately it didn't really work and actually made me quite constipated!
I am back on diclofenac now but that makes me feel sick.
I have been prescribed Tramedol too as an alternative but quite reluctant to take it as read the nasty bits about it being very addictive!
I think I am at the stage of my life that I need medication for all those twinges/arthritis that have appeared in the last year - I must book another appt.

I hope the Naproxen works for you though and you feel much better soon 🙂

Another thought on getting to the group... could you get in touch with the organiser to see if they would raise the subject of a lift share arrangement with a contribution to petrol costs?
