I've recently applied to have my driving licence renewed and have just received a letter from the DVLA revoking it owing to lack of hypo awareness. The thing is, my hypo awareness is perfect - I think I may have messed up a question on the renewal form.

Fortunately my annual review is this Tuesday, so I'm going to try and get it sorted out with my consultant.

Has anybody else had this kind of experience. I'm wondering if I need to ask my consultant to send the DVLA a letter confirming that I have no hypo awareness problems, or just re-apply. Does anybody know how long this would take to resolve? I've heard several estimates ranging from 6 weeks to 8 months!

Thanks.

Hi,
you need to ask your consultant to write a letter for you as well as your GP. Explain you have misread the question as the form is badly worded.
Many people have had this problem 😡 From reading other forums the average is 6 mths to get your licence back so do be warned.

Thanks for the advice Sue. I discussed things with my Consultant this week and found that the DVLA hadn't been in touch at all!

She's fully satisfied that I'm safe to drive and recommended that I re-apply for my licence straight away. I posted the application on Wednesday, so it's just a question of waiting now, even if it may be 6 months!

Update - I've recently received a letter from the DVLA acknowledging my application and telling me that they've written to my consultant - progress at last!

It'll take a while longer yet before I get a verdict, but at least their decision will be based on some expert opinion this time.

Glad to see things are moving forward little by little aus

Good luck! They are not the easiest organisation to deal with. Six months unable to drive just for ticking the wrong box on the form - cripes.

Let us know if you get it back sooner than that.

Will do. In the meantime I've bought myself a bike. It's been about 12 years since I last cycled, so I've got some shaping up to do!

what was it do you think that made them think you had unawareness.?

I'm not sure if I got confused with one of the questions. I think they were asking if I had ever had hypo unawareness. I had a couple of instances about 15 years ago, so in the spirit of complete honesty I ticked the 'Yes' box. In retrospect, maybe I should have included an additional note explaining the situation.

Have had run ins with them since going on insulin at each renewal
Dreading end of next year when I hit 70
Have always included details of my other problems in attached letter
Last time they wanted to know why I had missed out several consultants, across 3 hospitals
Did not refill form, sent it back with letter
BECAUSE I WAS DISCHARGED FROM THEIR CARE SHORTLY AFTER LAST REVIEW , READ NOTES SENT WITH FORM AND INFORMATION SUPPLIED ON LAST FORM😡
and also included a complete list of illness/treatment/outcome/end of treatment since being diagnosed in 95. Kept it on file for next time :D
I have been told, by GP, that the forms just get stuck in a computer so the response is fairly automatic
New licence arrived within a working week

Result! My driving licence was waiting for me on the doormat when I got home today! They've only given me a 12 month licence, but I'm finally back on the road!

Good luck to anybody else having problems with the DVLA.
