Does anybody have an aim or goal in mind that they want to achieve with diabetes, where the big D could make it that little bit more difficult?

Could be anything, running a marathon (As I know a few of you have already done!!) climbing a mountain, or something more spiritual or a life milestone.

After the early part of last year where I was convinced I was in for an early retirement.. Mine was to have my own children and see them grow to a non dependable age. Well now thats happening! and I feel well and truly in control of my D, and my life. It will now be to see grandchildren to a decent age.. Sounds not that big a deal, but after having diabetes since aged 8, Children at 30 ish, Grandchildren lets say between 55 & 60, Potentially that would be 50 years with diabeties and a medal round my neck.

So Grandchildren is mine - Anyone else?

I'd quite like that medal... but I was diagnosed at about 40! 😉

Get to retirment age :D
No but i do worry about my health and i would hate to give up work early.

I like this thread, a lot!

Ok, I think mine's probably children. I mean, this is a *long* way off yet! I'm 20 and on my year abroad! But since I was diagnoised (at 17) the thought of having children has terrified me. It still does. I remember being told "unplanned pregnancies are bad...not good for the baby...dangerous for you...preconception clinic...'permission' to start trying" and it scared the hell out of me! I was more worried about my A-Levels coming up in three months time than I was babies, but even so! Then I come on here and read in the pregnancy section about those of you that have had healthy babies, albeit with sometimes more stressful pregnancies, and then that some of you are now expecting baby number two tells me that it's all 100% worth it.

Like I've said, this is a long way off, but I hope that one day I will get over the "fear" that they put in me when I was first diagnosed.

Vicki 🙂

Children are no doubtedly a bigger achievment for the diabetic lady, than the man... You will find lots of wonderful mothers on here with healthy children who did so much for themselves and their babys and achieved their goals!

On another note - I always struggled with the concept of living abroad with D.. So thats a big achievment in itself!!

Yes thats another one - To reach retirement and have enough time to enjoy at least a few years of it!

Mine's a ongoing goal - to prove wrong every single stupid, limiting statement that starts 'Diabetics should never...' or 'Diabetics can't....' or 'Diabetics must always...', ranging from the trivial to the significant

"Diabetics shouldn't ever eat sweets"
Done

"Diabetics shouldn't scuba dive"
Done.

"Diabetics shouldn't fly in gliders"
Done.

"Diabetics shouldn't go to all-nighter gigs and use questionable substances"
Probably correct, but done

"Diabetics shouldn't ever drink energy drinks"
Done

"Diabetics shouldn't fly across multiple timezones"
Done

"Diabetics shouldn't go backpacking and live off beer, a roll of bread and a slice of cheese while travelling"
Done

"Diabetics shouldn't really go living abroad in foreign countries"
Done

"Diabetics shouldn't drink alcohol and then have a kebab on the way home"
Done and DONE!

"Diabetics probably shouldn't go jungle trekking away from civilisation and stay with a hill tribe"
Done

In my experience, there are plenty of people in this world who will assume that because you have diabetes, you're some delicate little flower who shouldn't ever be taken out of your comfort zone in case you go near a sugar cube and either explode or collapse. Every day any of us do something the same as anyone else is a victory. And every day is a chance to prove someone else that they're wrong.

I'd better not set any longevity goals... I got the D gene from one grandfather, but the other three grandparents died of/with dementia and I wouldn't wish THAT on anyone or their family.

My goal for now is to get down to the middle of merely 'overweight' BMI category. Will have to look up how much more I've got to go.

Yeah...living abroad has had it's moments. I will definitely be returning to the UK with my worst hba1c to date, that's for sure! I've done a split year abroad, as I'm study languages. Now, my hba1c was bad enough after living in France where they live off of bread and baked goods...ahhh, the croissants and patisseries! Now I'm in Spain where they constantly snack on tapas and drink sangr?a! Lifestyle's great, but on a diabetes-level it has been a nightmare! In that respect, I am very glad year abroad is just that...a year!

Have children safely
Not have a hypo in my sleep & die/be brain damaged (it's a constant worry)
Get a medal (I vote a telegram from the queen too!)
Not go blind or loose limbs

You might want to rethink that one, I suspect by the time any of us are 100, the Queen will be long gone! :D

Alright from king William & queen Catherine *blows raspberries*

And the telegram is for living with diabetes so long not being 100

What do you mean with living abroad and bad Hba1c ?
I came to England 13 years ago and my first appointment in the Diabetic - clinic made me cry for 3 days . .. just kidding !
It is not that bad !
After I was diagnosed my 2 boys were 5 and 3 years old but I had in both pregnancies gestational diabetes . luckely they are both healthy , my grandchild is now 6 years and healthy two .
So my goal is not to die blind . In the last 8 years I had loads of Laser and two eye op. And I was very close to loose my eyesight .
That is the reason that I'm now so strict with my diet . I would do everthing that this will never happen .

I don't want the medal so wouldn't waste a stamp applying for it. 😛

I'm more worried about losing something else which also has delicate blood vessels in it...

Fine Ill have it then and pretend I just look really great for my age!!

I dont know what you mean!! ...

In the earlier days of been a rebellious teen and a naughty diabetic I can distinctly rememebr my Mom being fed up with me and having a half heartedly jokey go at a friend of mine who was leading me astray on the P that day... "If his leg, arm or D@$K drops off, Itll be your fault!".

Shes kind of a cool Mom, but I found statments like this a little disturbing!
