My diabetes is all over the place just now. I have been diagnosed with a tumour on the kidney which has almost reached a major vein. Just got over a urine infection and now have a stinking cold. Do you find that your diabetes goes up the creek when ill and what do you do. I'm type 2 controlled so no medication. The tumour came out of the blue as thought it was gallbladder but ultra sound showed up the kidney thing, by the way I call it Sidney who lives in/on my kidney. Operation to remove said Sidney is 5th Feb but I'm up and down like a yoyo with sugar, any suggestions.

Hi muddlethru.

High BGs will compromise the immune system and slow healing. That said, any stress and certain meds you may be taking often affect BGs, so it may be a temporary condition.

Could you discuss with your GP or care team about any meds to keep you on the straight and narrow. If your BGs are elevated for any prolonged period, it certainly won't help post-op so I would have thought they'd be keen to get you down but it may be tricky if they're swinging erratically.

Have managed to get appointment for thursday with my doctor so hope he will get me on track again. I have my pre op assesment on the 28th of this month so want to be fit for that.Such a bind as I've always been a pretty fit person so not used to feeling like death warmed up.

I am sorry to hear that you are having so much thrown at you at the moment Illnesses and infections make you more insulin-resistant, so it sounds like your pancreas has a bit of a battle on its hands currently, but hopefully things will improve as you recover. For people on insulin the solutions is (relatively) straightforward, but you don't have that option. Probably best to keep well-hydrated, as active as possible and to try and restrict the carbs whilst you are poorly so your body has less to deal with.

Hope you are feeling much better very soon and that you are in good shape to give Sidney the send-off he deserves when the time comes to say your goodbyes (and good riddance!) 🙂

I do hope so! I keep meaning to arrange a meet in Southampton - I'll have a think about it! 🙂
