My mum has said that when she was young it was referred to as sugar diabetes.

yes to be honest it was/is his mum (84) who always refer to diabetes as that...

My dad was a Type 1. He was diagnosed at 29 and always referred to as 'having sugar'! 🙂

I had sugar diabetes when I was little as well (Diagnosed 1965)

I dont know why but i find it quite difficult when she refers to diabetes as sugar diabetes ...i spose its the whole thing of you ate too many sweets etc ...i got quite umpty with OH about it when he started referring to sugar diabetes ...just wondered what you all thought 🙂

I think it is an old description of the condition based on the fact that diagnosis used to be done by tasting the urine, which tasted sweet. It's also in contrast to diabetes insipidus which is a problem with the kidneys rather than anything to do with high blood sugar 🙂

Hi am
Yes I've heard of it before,my uncle had 'sugar' diabetes, 60's or early 70's I think and I remember it being said on the comedy show,Only fools and horses when del is saying something on the lines of " he thought he was a boxer called Sugar Diabetes (there was an actual boxer called Sugar Ray Leonard) sorry, but I cant remeber the exact words delboy said. Best wishes.

thank you for your replys i understand the phrase more now it has help me out x🙂

my aunties in their 80's still say sugar diabetes.

"Sugar diabetes" differentiates very clearly from diabetes insipidus, which is a completely different condition, although both cause excessive urination until under control - sugar in urine defines "sugar diabetes".
