As some here know, I have problems with my fasting BS, its always been in the high 8s to 10s and because the rest of the day they are perfect the medical people ( I call them that because I have no access to a DSN )all say its nothing to wory about, well after seven years of this, I decided to take the bull by the horns and try myself. I started nine days ago, when I decided to increase my night time Insulatard from 70 units straight up to 100 units, and the results are, these are my morning BS.

30/9.....7.2
1/10.....6.9
2/10.....5.2
3/10.....5.7
4/10.....6.9
5/10.....7.0
6/10.....5.8
7/10.....4.9

I must stress, this is not advice or suggestion for anyone else in a similar situation to try, as we know, we are all different, and what works for me, could well be disastrous for someone else.

John.

Good on you John for deciding yourself you need to address the fasting bs. 😛

Just be careful though as insultard does peak in the early hours of the morning and you could have night time hypo's.

This is what I experienced and was then switched to levemir.

Gret result John but as Di say's do be carefull of night time hypos.
Have you done any night time checks to see exactly what your blood sugar is doing?

Thanks Di. When I left hospital I was switched to Levimer, but about 18 months ago I asked to go back on Insulatard. I have never to the best of my knowledge had a night time hypo. 🙂

Well done on such good waking BGs. I'm glad that you are achieving those without night time hypos

Good on you for being brave enough to try! 🙂

Do a test around 3am if you wanted to check for hypos (it's what Type 1s are taught on that DAFNE course), but if you find you go to bed on a good level and wake on a good level, you're probably all right anyway.

Keep up the good work! 🙂

Thanks Sue. I've made so many changes and checks over the past seven years, I've almost lost count, and out of frustion I decided on this action. With the 3am checks my BS have been between 7 and 9 then when I get up they are between 8 and 10. During the day my BG are always between 4 and 6.

Excellent early results, but ....... Good grief John! A nearly 50% increase! 😱

People like John Walsh and Gary Taubes say no more than 10% at a time ....

Do be careful; I think I might have tried a bit less first LOL

Thank you Trophy. I don't know who those gentlemen are that say no more than 10% at a time, but they do not know my history. My consultant once told me because of the insulin resistance ignore 10% and increase by 10 units at a time, I went along with the 10% but it made no inroads at all not even a pip. I knew I wouldn't die 😱 based on the amount of Novorapid I take during the day in total, which is 140 units 🙂

Well done John, I knew you took a lot, even more than me. Interestingly I've recently re-introduced a split dose of Levemir to bring down the morning levels and have gone from 90 units in the morning to 40 and then 50 units in the evening and had my first 5.6 fasting reading this morning.
My Levemir units dropped by 60 when I started in Victoza (from 140 to 80). Has that been suggested for you, might be worth a go, 140 units is a lot in one go, I used to be covered in injection lumps).
