Hi all

Fiona came home on Monday, telling us that she had to give a lesson on Diabetes together with 3 other girls. The teacher gave her all the material they are supposed to use. Well, Fiona wasn?t very happy with the material!!!! I haven?t seen it, as she wasn?t allowed to bring it home. Apparently, it says that teens with D have to have a strict diet provided by the doctor and a strict exercise regime. They have to have a morning snack and an evening snack ( No mention of an afternoon snack).
Fiona tells me she went to see the teacher to tell her she wasn?t happy about this. The teacher just said, oh I just picked the first website to copy it off.
Fiona worried that she had to work from this sheet. So I told her she should do what she thinks right ? go and have another chat with teach before the lesson. I also told her to take the carbs and cals book, but she forgot.

Well, the lesson went really well.
Fiona told them the truth 😉 She said that teens with D can eat everything except poison and food prepared with poison, lol. All the girls had a sheet that they had to fill in from the info Fiona was giving them. So they got a bit confused as to what to write in the box with the question: ?What can?t Diabetics eat?? Teacher insisted they couldn?t leave it blank, so Fiona told them to write ?nothing?.

She didn?t tell her school friends anything from the work sheet. Also the glucose levels were supposed to be in the 100s, which luckily Fiona knew was the American version. She said that if the reading really was that high in this country they?d be dead. She told them that the levels should be between 4-10 (which used to be right for Carol), but the teacher corrected her and said between 4-7.

Apparently this info sheet the teacher prepared was copied from Wikipedia.

Fiona also told me that they had to do something with Judaism and that info about that was wrong too, according to the Jewish girl in her class.

Well -well done Fiona -she could have felt quite intimidated in that position- think they should have asked your permission first-why dont you send for that JDRF teaching pack for schools and give it to the teacher so she has up to date info-Ive sent for one- never know when you might need these things-link is in parents section

It wasn't a full hour lesson, just a little bit of it. I think Fiona said about 3 senteces and the others 1 each.

I just might get the jdrf school thingy for the teacher for next time.

well if they are lesson planning at least she will be telling the kids the correct info- not a load of b***S**t. -gets me so cross:(

I know!! 😱 What if Fiona hadn't known about D?? She would have just told them what it said on the sheet

Well done to Fiona for questioning the information and taking action to ensure the truth was told 🙂 Very sloppy research by the teacher who ought to be censured for putting so little effort into gathering valid and up to date material :(

well -is this GCSE work? abit worrying the teacher doesnt research properly😱

No, no- Fiona is only in year 8 🙂

well good for her at 12/13 to have the confidence to put her points across so well- must be a girl thing -not sure H { we do call him H] would have done🙂

well I've just googled diabetes and the first website wasn't wikipedia, it was Diabetes UK 😱
I went on Wiki, just to see and I find that none of the things Fiona told me are on there at all

Thanks, I thought she was brave contradicting the teacher, but she's learnt it from Carol, who also had to contradict the teacher.
And after living with D (not personally having it) for 5 1/2 years, she's as much an expert as Carol

oh dear - she could certainly do with that teaching pack -lets face it it she wont have to do any lesson planning -all the materials are provided-less work for her!:D

true :D

I'll go and order one for her

could be an early teachers christmas prezzie:D- about all she deserves:(

Ordered 2 packs 🙂

How about applauding the teacher for covering the subject. Ok, she made mistakes, but it sounds as if she listened to the expert (Fiona), who was given a valuable opportunity to be an authority on a subject.

I appreciate that the teacher got some stuff wrong - but I bet this was not part of her training. I just think that some of the comments are a bit harsh. How many of us, before we were diabetic, would have known anything at all about it? I know when I was first diagnosed I was not even aware that there were two types.

Many people with diabetes are still on mixed insulins which means they do have to eat regular meals.

This teacher probably works a 60+ hour week. The fact that she thought it was a good idea to do a lesson on diabetes, and that she had the inspiration to ask students who knew about it to lead the session, demonstrate to me that she has a lot going for her.

Sorry, as an ex-teacher I can be sensitive!

Covering diabetes is one of the required elements - on t'other Forum we have a T1 senior school teacher (specialist subject - Science LOL) and she always loves the diabetes lesson.

In any event, she always tells her class she has diabetes upfront, and openly tests, used to openly jab, but now pumping and she happily dives down her front (without exposing her underwear) and does what she need sto do mid class. She explains having to take a hypo remedy from time to time as class wouldn't be all that impressed to see Miss eating JBs or whatever, when they can't.

Bet her pupils know a lot more about D than most !

Well done Fiona🙂

Covering diabetes is one of the required elements -

That's what I was going to say in reply to Mary.
Carol is 3 years older than Fiona and had to go through the same inaccuracies.

I will give Fiona the school pack when it arrives, so she can give it to the teacher in the hope she'll use it in the other classes. But I guess I better find something about type 2 too, otherwise the lesson is going to be a little onesided again.

Even the school nurse doesn't quite understand it. Once she phoned about something else, but also said to me that she didn't want to snitch, but she'd seen Carol eat an ice cream sold at school. I didn't enlighten her, as I usually can't get a word in edgewise once she gets going.

Oh God. There is no hope is there?

They don't get ANY proper training re diabetes, which in school is much more likely to be T1 methinks (well the pupils anyway!)

Now - do they get any for epilepsy?
