what sort of things do you eat? You may be able to tweak there a bit, do you carb count? I know many people do.

Sorry I can't be a lot of help, but I'm sure someone will.

Hi caroline I have 1 slice low Gi bread with poached egg for breakfast
mid morning piece of fruit,
Lunch 3 ryvitas with half fat cheese maybe low fat yohurt
piece of fruit for afternoon snack
Dinner could be chicken casserole no potatoes, rice or pasta
then sugar free jelly with some fruit.

Don't think you can tweek much there. How often do you test? That gives an indication of what foods will give you high readings.

Was told only to test twice per week as I am type 2 at the moment and not on insulin the Dr gave a smirk when I tested twice a day !!

Idiot! (your GP not you I mean) Well an A1c of 26 is enough to give anyone the collywobbles, no wonder you are worried.

Get the GAD65 test done asap but be warned they take ages to come back, not sure if they have to be tested on a virgin's thigh or why they take so long - but it's a certain fact you can't go long with that sort of BG (because your meter must read higher than 26 to get an A1c of 26 9eg with an average (regular use) meter score of high 7's ish, you'd probably have an A1c of about 7-ish)

And you can't afford to leave it that high for any longer than strictly necessary. Have the meter tests inproved at all from the metformin, so far? And do they look like they are improving from the Sitagliptin? - because if they don't very soon - the doc certainly needs to give your BG more help QUICKLY.

Twice a week is useless for all practical purposes really. Can you afford to self-fund a couple of pots of strips to test more regularly, at all? - what meter do you have as some makes are cheaper than others to buy yourself?

Thanks Trophy I have avvia nano since day 1 I did test 4 times a day in the first year and a half then i felt like an idiot when the Dr gave his smirk only started sitagliptin 2 weeks ago as metformin was not helping BG was down to 13.2 this morning. I had the Gad test this morning so will have to wait the outcome from that. Test strips are not a problem to purchase I would pay anything to have peace of mind.

How long have you been diagnosed? GAD65 tests are often unreliable after a certain period because the antibodies they are testing for have been, done their damage and gone. I agree that your Dr isn't being as proactive as he should be in the light of an Hba1c of 26. Can you ask for a CPeptide test which will show how much insulin of your own you are producing? Meantime you must be feeling absolutely rotten with BGs that high. So yes, test a lot if you can and avoid any food that makes you spike... see Jennifer's advice and Alan Shanley's Test, Review, adjust. However don't give up pursuing a proper diagnosis which will enable you to have appropriate treatment.

Are you sure your hba1c is 26? That would mean an average BG of around 45mmols (I think) and I really can't imagine that is possible but if it is then it needs sorted now with urgency... no one should be without insulin with levels so high. If that hba1c is correct I wouldn't wait for test results.

I must admit, when I first read this I thought it must surely be wrong. I thought the HbA1c test would only go up to around 15% or so  (I remember reading a thread somewhere where people were trying to discover what the highest HbA1c might be).

I wondered if it might have been a spot BG, rather than A1c. Alternatively, of course if could be HbA1c in mmol/mol (new numbers) but that would be 4.x% so that doesn't make sense either

I think hospital hba1c machines only read up to 14 or 15, to get a higher result it has to be a lab test. Totally nontechnical explanation there! Just think if you have an average level of 40+ what the daily range would be? Think it would be totally negligent of a doctor to allow anyone to leave the room (after that result) without insulin!

Well you see Alba, that's what I thought when I said if your meter said ..... your A1c would be lower at ..... - but I had no reference for really high numbers. Either meter or A1c I mean ..... I know as the readings increase, the gap between the A1c (which is always the lower figure) and the meter average will get wider and wider - but I couldn't have said the meter one would be around 40.

I also think I've read somewhere that GAD tests are now actually of use even if you've been diagnosed for quite a while - but that's assuming someone really expert is interpreting the results of it - and most GPs just are NOT that expert. Neither are they supposed to be so that's no surprise.

Hi Alba,

i am wondering now after doing some research about having an Hba1c of 26
and still feeling fine maybe I have picked the Dr up wrong or he has made a mistake will let you know 🙂

as I am still learning that's why I posted my question now I think about it,it is very strange it's always when I come out of the surgery I say to my self why didn't I ask more questions I think I would be in the hospital on insulin if it was a true reading !!

You're not alone - I always think of stuff to ask afterwards! 🙂

My head gets so confused when I get bad news hopefully the Dr has made a mistake have you ever heard of Hba1c this high and still feel fine?

No, I can't imagine it. For it to be that high you would have to have had extremely high levels for at least 6-12 weeks prior to the test and would have been having all sorts of problems. Even as a one-off fingerprick test it would be considered very high. Personally, I start to feel nauseous if my levels go above 12 and it affects me in other ways if I have higher levels for a few days e.g. numbness or shooting pains in my toes from neuropathy.

Yup - same as Northie.

I know when mine gets any higher than say 15 and stays there for any length of time I go into hibernation mode - can't stay upright, HAVE to lie down flat because I am dizzy and nauseous and I instantly fall into a deep sleep. It is what the body is sposed to do and it's disturbing because it is actually a diabetic coma. However luckily for me I am on insulin so I have managed to inject some to correct it before I let myself pass out, then when it gets down to a suitable level, I wake up.

I should say, when this passing out business happened, I was, otherwise than diabetes, quite ill at the time, which explained the highs but didn't make it any easier to deal with them, even though I knew it was that which was causing it.
