Medic Alert straps

As you mentioned medic alerts, I thought I'd mention an encounter I had on the Tube in London during Olympic fortnight. I was travelling, in Games Maker uniform, from my friends' home to Olympic Park, ready to start my shift at 1530 - an older man, in his 60s or 70s, I guess, with a wooden walking pole, decorated with bands of electrical tape was sitting opposite and noticed my "Medic Alert" strap on my daysack. He asked where I got it, as he thought it was noticable and useful, being reflective yellow with red crosses, and has space for details to be written inside, on paper in clear plastic pouch. I explained that I'd got it from Up & Running (running shop) - 2 straps for about ?5, and that I'd also given a pair to my partner, so he could carry ID when running, plus make him a bit more obvious to traffic. They can be attached to laces of running shoes, for when running with no kit.

So, far, I think the strap has been a useful bit of additional reflective kit when walking / running / cycling and to alert others to me being a medic!

As well as being an advert, it also seems to me to be based on a complete misunderstanding of diabetes. It says that there are basically two types of diabetes: hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia, and it seems to imply that what you need is a medicalert bracelet which says which type you have!

I read the comments but most of them seem irrelevant to diabetes so didn't post a comment.

Being an avid Emmerdale watcher the storyline wasn't really covered; we know Kerry has diabetes and spent the night in hospital (due to overdoing it on alcohol) but that was it...nothing said since...

So actually, the article is a non-story to promote a company's products, and they've put a stupid explanation in! 🙄

Total non-event , I'd forgotten she was 'supposed' to be in a diabetic coma altogether, just didn't really form much of the plotline, just an excuse to stir up Amy. She wasn't even in a coma, it was just a lie. Shame Emmerdale usually does quite a lot on odd topics like this. Then they haven't really done much with Rona's baby and Downs syndrome either.

diabetes was also mentioned on the Hairy Bakers tonight.

one of them said his brother was diabetic and had to eat a certain amount of carbohydrates so he was making bro a steak sandwich but he ate himself !

The Hairy Bakers have been living on 1200 calories a day to lose weight and % of body fat. Seems to be working - one of the lumps reduced his body fat % from 42 to 32 in a month..

Anybody see it ?

I watched it. It seemed to be mainly focused on cutting down fat, although they did swap a sandwich for a wrap and cut the sugar in a sweet and sour. I did think it was an encouraging programme. Not much use to me as a vegetarian though! Perhaps his brother is on fixed insulin doses.

Just wanted to say this week in Emmerdale they will be covering diabetes, kerrys insulin pen is found by someone then a series of events means she end up in hospital in a coma.this time they look like its guna be covered more

Let's hope they do a better job of portraying Type1 than they do with Type2. Sandy, the Vicar's father is supposed to be a Type 2, he eats anything and everything and drinks as much as he can get his hands on.

You would think wouldn't you that we all must be either having fits or suddenly falling into comas since they are the only things that ever happen to diabetics in TV stories.


I really think they have a different type of D than us because I've never had either in 40+ years ...... and rarely see anyone else report that they've had it happen either .....

Ahuh everytime I see him int pub I say to OH his diabetes must be very well controlled for the amount he knocks back
