As long as your personal physician approves it first, the best diet for an overweight person is usually one that will put you in a state of benign dietary ketosis.

The key to losing body fat is to shift your body from burning carbohydrates to burning fats. To do that, it is necessary to cut one's intake of carbohydrates. If you cut your intake of carbohydrates, your body will automatically shift to burning fat. Obviously, you want it to burn stored fat.

If you are doing it properly it takes about three days to get into ketosis. It's easy to determine if you are in ketosis by testing your urine with reagent strips (Ketostix). Simply adjust your individual carb intake until you are getting a reading twice daily in the "trace" or "small" range for maximum fat loss.

as written by a leading expert on the matter. sorry to say but to even have trace ammounts of ketones in a diabetic is dangerous. i for one would never cut my carbs out and start to burn fat as it is suggested here. very dangerous some of the advice given in relation to dietary ketosis.

I get traces daily all by myself :(

yeah sounds scary.

how else do you lose weight? where does the fat go??

You have just described the Atkins diet. The older version said you had to eat fat as well ie fry your food, have cream in coffee etc etc. They have revamped it apparently to allow a few more carbs but not many I don't think. I did it once and lost 11 lb in 6 weeks but it is not a diet for people with diabetes, I think I got up to 20 carbs per day (not per meal).

The Atkins diet killed people so they had to change it :(

Yes no doubt. I think Mr Atkins had a heart attack didn't he and died or did he fall over and die, can't remember.

An ex of mine did a diet called the Scarsdale Diet - similar to Arkins. It was astonishing how quickly she lost weight. Yuo weren't allowed to do it for more than two weeks because of the dangers. Plus, they did mention ketones in the book, breath smelling of pear drops etc., but it's only now that I know what actually goes on with them! I lost 17 pounds in 3 days on the 'Welcome to Diabetes' diet!😱

Hey talking of diets, have any of you heard of the blood type diet, I read about the theory of every blood type deals with food differently so each blood type should eat differently. I'm still trying to find out my blood type before I look any further into it.

Yes I have heard of that, some of the celebs do it. It sounds quite good but I think it is expensive to join the clubs.

Ketosis is a totally natural bodily state , it is only dangerous when it is not controlled by Insulin. As I have a fridge full of the stuff I am totally unconcerned by Ketosis .😱😱😱😱

No fear I won't be joining any clubs! Just think it may give an insight to something interesting, perhaps even beneficial!

Ketosis

Dear Mike,

Thanks for starting a new thread. However, from your post I now see that it is futile to debate the issue with you because no matter what I say I perceive that there is no way to change your viewpoint.

Dear Angeleyes,
What does "I get traces daily all by myself " mean?
Would you care to provide me with some evidence to back your statement about Atkins killing people?

Dear Katie,
Your post is very perceptive. If you want to lose fat the only way to do so is to burn it as fuel. A by product of this process is ketones.

Dear Adrienne,
Your post tells me one of two things
1. You have never read Atkins or
2. You have and didn't understand it.

Atkins has four phases it only during the first (Induction) that 20gms of carbs is used. After that carbs are gradually increased. The long term objective of Atkins is to consume sufficient carbs so that you neither gain or lose weight i.e. you maintain a stable target weight. The final level of carbs is usually much more than 20gms.

sorry but when did i bash you for being a low/no carber??? i think you will find that i havent and have said on numerous occasions that it is personal choice and that I as in me myself would not be going low carb as i find that i again me myself have no rpoblems with carbs and that diabetes is a personal thing and that what works for one doesnt mean it will work for everyone.

you dont thats the bodies natural way of burning body fat.

Thanks guys, So if this is the case, I now don't understand why it is dangerous to be in "dietary ketosis" surely everyone has lost weight at some stage in their lives, just naturally... And some people need to lose weight, so why is it bad? how else are you supposed to lose weight?

Surgery? 😱

My understanding of it is as Dodger describes. The danger to Type 1s when there is insufficient insulin available to process the ketones - this might happen when our pancreas first stops doing its stuff, or if we fall ill and our insulin requirements increase rapidly and unpredictably.

its only dangerous when the ketones get out of control , with insulin they are kept in check and you wont get dka , (as a diabetic) everyone who eats less calories then they use in a day will eventually start to burn fat , it is totally natural , irrespective of whether you are a low/no carber or are just eating less (on a diet)
