Evening all, I've been feeling a little unwell for the last coule of days, nothing major just a bit of a sore throat and slight cough. Two questions for you knowledgeable people:

1) Any recommendations for 'Suagr Free' throat lozenge?
2) BG's are a little higher than they have been of late, should I adjust Basel or add extra Bolus?

TIA

Sorry to hear this Dan :( I usually have Halls sugarfree mentholyptus cherry for a sore throuat or when I'm suffering from a cold. Also, I tend to add extra bolus with meals rather than adjusting basal unless my waking levels are persistently bad. As you may know, I'm not actually using any lantus at the moment, but I did feel the need for a couple of units when I was feeling under the weather recently as my waking levels were up in the 8s rather than the 5s that I'm used to seeing.

Hope it's short-lived and you feel much better soon! 🙂

Thanks Alan, I'll try and find some Halls! I thought adding a little extra to the Bolous would be the best course of action, and is pretty much what I've been trying, I guess the question is how much to add, the age old "we're all different so you have to try and find out what works for the individual" situation!

Sure it won't last long!

I'm afraid that's pretty much it Dan, a bit like how long is a piece of string!🙄

I hope you will feel better soon Dan. I have had the same virus and it's really horrible. Getting over it now hopefully but cough lingering on. It's the catarrh that drives me mad - where does it all come from!!!! :(((

you can get sugar free strawberry strpsils from Boots

I've used sugar free strepsils too and they seem pretty good. I hope you soon feel better.

Hi Robski - I hope you feel better soon.🙂

Got hold of some of the Sugar Free Halls, couldn't find the strepsils in Tesco and couldn't be bothered with treking to boots!

Feels like it might be turning into a full blown cold now, but it will take more than that to keep me down!!!

Excuse me while I sneeze!!! Achoooo!

Just popped a Cherry Halls in my mouth and they taste great! Then I looked at the packet...Yes, they are sugar free however per 100g they are 97.1g of Carbs! This is made up of 0g Sugar and 97.1g Polyols which I've never heard of.

Now the whole packet is only 32g but that makes it 31g carbohydrate, a packet of those will raise my BG!!! There are 9 sweets in a packet so each one is almost 3.5g of Carb, for me 2 of those will require a unit of NR!

Best sugar free treatment for sore throat that I know / use is gargling with hot salty water - takes pain away for at least 30 mins.

Whilst polyols are technically carbs, they don't impact your blood sugar levels in the same way as ordinary carbs. This page includes a useful table comparing the GI of the various polyols:

In addition to salt water, gargling baking soda in water really, really works well too. You can also get those chloroseptic sprays - they always make my throat feel a bit thick but they do numb the pain.

Keep a close eye on your BGs - I tend to keep my basals constant and do compensatory boluses when ill. I've also found that GABA tends to make a cold go more quickly, while the usual all-in-one cold tablets are great for knocking out the symptoms. Interestingly, high doses of GABA are also associated with reversing T1 in mice although in my experience, this doesn't translate to people.

Thanks for the link Alan, very interesting. I think the packaging is rather confusing and one could quite easily calculate 3.5g carb per sweet and inject accordingly!

Gargling baking soda sounds quite...yuk, but I might give it a go if things don't improve!

Will take a look for GABA, may be worth a go, for the cold benefits not the T1 reversal, I'm no mouse 🙂 Thanks DeusXM

Very best wishes for a speedy recovery dan
