Basically i've applied for a provisional license and im just waiting for a letter back. did say i may need to get a letter from the docs.
but i don't actually wanna drive its just for a form of i.d.
i'm a bit worried that i wont have it for this time next month :/

I wouldn't hold out much hope of having it in a month. I sent mine back 2 months ago and am still waiting for a new one, I've had a letter saying they have completed their medical review and will issue me a 3 year license but still no license!

I don't think the wheels at the DVLA turn very quickly!

You never know though, you might be lucky!

Had mine back within a week last time.....amazed!
Just one thing Estellaa, I'd go for a passport as ID as opposed to a provisional licence, a lot less hassle. 🙂

I guess there's hope then 🙂

Not sure if mine is taking so long becuase it's the first time I've had to report my diabetes to the DVLA.

i sent them back a form about a month ago to advise about diabetes, and now taking insulin.

I have heard nothing - not sure if I should be worried, happy 😉 or whether I should be chasing them - sounds like they take ages, so i'll leave it another month or so then will give them a call.

I agree a passport would be easier for ID?

I took them about 6 weeks to write back to me advising they had completed their medical investigation after I returned the form. They also returned the form I'd sent as I hadn't answered the question regarding "Always being aware of Hypo's" I can't answer the question as I've never had a hypo so how can I say I'm always aware of the symptoms! I answered that I know the symptoms and sent it back, will wait and see if that's OK for them!!

Ooooer, Robofski. 😱

So, if you don't know the symptoms - how can you guarantee that you'd immediately pull over and stop (etc) if you had one?

I mean they aren't in a position to guarantee it, for any of us, are they? - so we have to, and sign to say we promise to do it - cross-my-heart-and-hope-to-die.

Their concern you see, isn't for you (or me etc) It's for the safety of all road users. If they deem it unsafe for you to be taking a hypo-inducing medication and NOT be able to recognise that hypo - and therefore (maybe?) won't renew your licence - on what basis would you be able to argue against that?

At no point did I say I didn't KNOW the symptoms, I wasn't able to answer the question about getting warning signs as I've NEVER had a hypo. Therefore if my diabetes control is PERFECT (not that it is) and I never experience a hypo my whole life and therefore never know if I get warning signs it would be a good argument to never allow me to drive, I don't think so!

Interestingly the form has now been changed and there is a specific question that asks if you have ever had a hypo, if you answer no then you skip the questions about being aware of the symptoms, if only I'd waited a couple of weeks to inform them I would have probably got the new form!

Ah well then - because they only issue your new licence 'today' I would hold whenever they actually make the decision, they have to interpret your answers in the light of 'today's' questions !

So - if they did refuse it, you've got VERY good grounds for appeal !! LOL

A point I've made before. I've only had hypo's in the middle of the night so don't really know what it might feel like during the day. However without lying on the form, I am sure you can work out what they want to hear in order to issue the licence.

I await their decision with baited breath! I've only had my new car for 6 months so they had better make the right decision!

I know I could have easily ticked the 'Yes' box but that wouldn't be the truth, the fact of the matter is I couldn't answer their question at all. I think the new questions are much better. I did actually call them and say I couldn't answer the question and they said just write you've never had a hypo which I did and they still sent the form back!

I'm sure given the new questions they'll issue a license, there'll be trouble if they don't!

Hi Estellaa

We ordered the forms for my son a couple of weeks ago and somewhere on the direct.gov website there is a note that says it can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months to get your first licence. Given that that comment was on the 'general' page, you can guarantee if it's your first licence AND you have a medical form enclosed with it, it's far more likely to be towards the end of the timescale. Sorry!

If it's only for ID you want it, isn't there some sort of National ID scheme young people can sign up to? I'm sure our local Tesco used to have some poster up a couple of years ago showing what forms of ID are acceptable.
