Hello guys. I've been off school (work!) since Monday. It started out as a horrible coldy thing and sent my blood sugars rocketing (they shot up to 16 on Sunday afternoon and stayed there all of Monday). I felt much better yesterday and managed to get them down to a more respectable level in the afternoon (but only giving myself about double the insulin I would normally have had, but eating very little).

However i went to bed with a blood sugar of 10 and when I woke up it was back up to 17. What do I do?! I remember being told about sliding scales but I really can't remember what to do. I am going to make a doc's appointment later because I need to check for ketones and don't have any ketostix but inthe meantime how do I get them down?! I'm feeling very grotty and getting a bit worried...

I was hoping to be back at work today - I have a year 6 production of the Lion King to organise 😱

I think you are doing as much as you can, try to eat as normally as possible and keep taking the medication your on.

The doctor or practice nurse will be able to help too.

I hope you feel better soon.

hey munjeeta as caroline says you seem to be doing as best as you possibly can just keep an extra eye on your levels so to speak and see what the GP has to say

Get Well Soon xx🙂

Thank you! I always get really fed up when I run this high :( But will keep testing and speak to my GP later. Grrrr...

p.s on the lion king side of things cant somebody else at least start the organisation while your off sick?

Yeah think you are doing everything you can, at least next time you are ill you will already have some ketostix. Keep testing and taking a bit of extra insulin, oh and drink plenty of water!

Sorry, but this part made me laugh 😉

Hi Munjeeta

Sounds like you are doing well. If you are worried about your blood sugars overnight then sadly the only thing to do is set an alarm and test them in the night. I found a similar problem last time I was ill. I was checking every 2 hours in the day to try and get ketones down but then like you my sugars would rocket overnight so I was back to square one again. The only way I found to solve it was checking every 2 hours through the night until they were relatively stable again.

Hope you get well soon.

Thank you. Yes, I'm testing every hour during the day but as I thought they'd come down yesterday evening I just assumed they would be ok this morning... I think I will set my alarm tonight, even if they have come down during the day.

Hmm... Laughing at others' misfortune, Katie?! 😛

And Steff, yes, the kids are busy practising singing, but can't get the scenes acted until I get back unfortunately... Manyana!

Haha... But I'm not laughing now... It was a moment of competitiveness and I have learnt from my mistakes... 😛

I'm now 18. 2 hours after breakfast and having taken 3 extra units :( I have a doc's appointment at 10. Bloody diabetes 😡

lol aww. :( Hope the doctor helps out - hopefully he'll know something about diabetes! At least you will be able to test for ketones. goodluck!

Yay: No ketones :D That's something. Doctor was really helpful and have also spoken to my DSN. Although blood sugars are down to 13 now so hopefully on the way to better things...
