Had my 6 month check up a few days ago and got my results there.
My HBA1C has gone up from 7.0 to 7.6
Now i know that figure is not good but is it very, very bad.
I have slipped back into the sweet stuff regime as past while so that will have to stop but it is so bloody hard especially as i have a very sweet tooth.

Not very very bad no... Some people would give their right arm for an A1c in the 7's and you should congratulate yourself for it because it takes effort to get one.

But the strange thing about the 'likelihood of complications' graphs/data I have seen is that it is one of those weird 'hockey stick' shaped curves. So that even a few decimal points can be worth shaving off between 6, 7 and 8 with a seemingly disproportionate effect on risk.

I've seen a table that you are perhaps 4x as likely to have some retinopathy in 15 years with an 8 than you are with a 7. Not certain by any means, but you just end up buying more tickets in the Retinopathy Lotto.

Sorry to hear it has gone up Jon, but it looks like you know the reasons why and it is a learning game. I never had a particularly sweet tooth before diagnosis, but was a big fan of crisps, which of course are carby and not so good. I managed to wean myself off them by finding a subsitute which turned out to be dry roasted peanuts. I find having something savoury stops me craving food much more quickly. An alternative for a sweet tooth would be to make up some sugar-free jellies. I get the packet ones which will make 6 yoghurt pot sized portions for about 20p 🙂

Hope you can find a suitable substitute for you, and that you are rewarded with an improvement next time around 🙂

Hi Jon
Sorry your results have increased slightly, but are not very bad results, i too have a sweet tooth.
I have the sugar-free jellies that tends to take the craving away, plus i chew on sugar-free gum all day as that stops me eating between meals.
Hope you can find a substitute that helps you too.

hi mine went from 7.5 to 7.2 to 8, just gotta re focus and get back on track, dont beat yourself up i have a sweet tooth and also swear by sugar free jelly.... carb counting helps me to eat the odd sweet item without messing up and i'm also hoping for a better result next time, all the best

:D I'd love a 7.6....... :D
