Night hypo on one unit of lantus

Personally, I think you're cured :D :D

Which method do you think I chose? :D

I met a man who, thrice a week
Ate seven pickled eggs?
Another man I came across
Smeared treacle on his legs!
And yet another squeezed the leaves
Of Himalayan plants,
Then quite obscurely poured the juice
Into his underpants!

When asked what led them to perform
These strange and worrying acts,
They paused, and with a knowing wink
Apprised me of the facts:

It?s well known on the world wide web
That, for a pound or two,
Enlightened gurus will divulge
A means to cure you!
But, as we are all different,
With wealth and needs diverse,
A tailored cure must be devised
That suits your tastes (and purse!)

?For me, eggs steeped in vinegar ?
As long as it is pure ?
Will neutralise sugar in my blood,
And thus provide the cure!?

?An egg cure wasn?t right for me,
But treacle smeared just so
Will draw the glucose from my blood,
And keep my levels low!?

?And you?? I asked the man in pants,
?Your cure?s the strangest yet!?
?Indeed! My pants, the guru claimed,
Must be forever wet!
But not just any liquid goo
Would fix my pancreas,
But only that extruded from
Expensive mountain grass!?

And with these words I took my leave
And slowly backed away,
For I was sure there is no cure
However much you pay!

You forgot the cinnamon cure! Great poem though. :D

Well, I chickened out last night and took my lantus. Ought to have tried giving it a miss really, as my level was 4.7 this morning and I usually decrease my lantus when I wake in the 4s. No run today though, so I'll see how things go tomorrow and might try missing the dose tomorrow night.

As you often ask others Alan, do you have a half unit pen? Mind you, if you are like my son, your Lantus is in pre-filled pens?

I use an autopen 24 which uses cartridges Tina. There is no such thing as a half-unit lantus pen unfortunately, they don't exist :(

It would be interesting to see what the results were to your blood glucose levels should you stop the lantus, when you were injecting just 5 units a day I thought this was extraordinarily low but to inject one is staggering😱

What does your medical team say about your low basal requirements?

My consultant thinks it is almost certain that I am still producing some of my own insulin. One thing I would say though, is that my lantus requirements increase quite a lot if I have a 'lazy' period and don't do any exercise. It clearly illustrates to me just how much more sensitive you become to insulin when you exercise regularly - it's not just a small effect, it's really quite substantial. 😱

Makes sense what you're saying about exercise and lazy days, does your novorapid reduce just as much or is it just your lantus insulin?

The novorapid does reduce. I think that my lowest total daily dose (including 1 unit of lantus) was 19 units. This was in the 'run up' to the half marathon. My current TDD is in the region of 23-25 units. During 'lazy' periods my TDD is around 35 units. When I was diagnosed my TDD was about 60 units, of which 20 units was lantus.

So I take it the Lantus cartridges won't fit into another pen? I know my son has a basic Novopen for his Novorapid and the Junior version and the 'Demi 3' both give half units. His Humapen for his Humilin also has half units. I didn't know if any of these pens/cartridges are interchangeable? We do use the same needles on all 3 pens, so just wondered?

I do hope you get things sorted Alan - but just wanted to say I love the poem.

Looks like you are getting some good advice and support on this thread from those in the know so hopefully things will be sorted for you soon.🙂

I'm amazed that you need so little lantus. I hope that you get it all sorted out very soon.

No, they are deliberately made not to fit. In Novopens and the like, the screw fitting for the needle is on the cartridge, whereas with lantus it is on the pen. Stupid really, although I suppose there is a marginal benefit in that you can't put the wrong kind of insulin in the pen by mistake.

I'm late once again joining your post, be really interesting to see what happens without your lantus!

Good luck x
