I've a question...

I've read threads where some guys have said their readings are between 5
and 7 - is this after food or by random testing during the day...

My readings are usually between 4 and 7 before eating, but after eating would rise to between 7 and 9, falling back to 4-7 before next meal.

I had a high reading last week when I ate a Jamie Oliver pollock fish cake and a few chips; didn't count on the breadcrumbs...😱 won't be doing that again. Is the rise between 7 and 9 2 hrs after a meal or 1hr? x

The aim is to not go above 9 (or 8.5 for Type 2) at any point after eating, so if you were 9 at 1 hour then you would hope that that was the peak and that you would then start moving back down. You'd only know if that was the peak if you tested again at two hours and it was lower. Remember that different foods digest at different rates, so you need to learn the peak of new or favourite foods. Remember though, that this is 'ideal world' stuff so you shouldn't be worried if you can't hit these numbers every time 🙂

I find that readings can and do vary. When first diagnosed I was testing 3 to 4 times a day, now that I have had my 2nd HbA1c test that indicated stability, I am now just testing on alternate days, or when I am eating something totally different.

As an example a few weeks ago I had baked salmon with sweet potato mash and veg, a glass of wine and coffee, my post meal reading was 8, yesterday I had the same meal and the reading was 6.3!

I have made up a database of primarily my main meals, enabling me to see what gives me a spike, this has helped enormously, I now have a 30 day average of 7.3 2 hours post meals.

So far so good😎

That's a pretty impressive average macabee! 🙂 Don't forget that there are oodles of other factors to take into account, apart from the actual food (like activity etc.) so this may be why the numbers vary for the same meal. But as long as they are varying around good numbers then you have nothing to worry about 🙂 Keep up the good work!
