Whatever I do, I can't seem to get my morning readings below 11. I have had a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs and one slice of parma ham, no toast but with black coffee. I have had a mid morning snack of half an apple.

About to take the dogs for a walk which will take about 45mins and will have another 2 walks of the same length later on in the day.

I'm at a loss as my numbers start coming down after lunch and by evening reach a respectable 7.2.

I am on one x 500mg Metformin and though it might be better to take in the morning instead of last thing at night but nothing has changed for the better.

Any ideas?

Good morning Donna.

I'm no expert when it comes to Metformin, but if your best reading of the day is 7.2, then I think it might be an idea to speak to your Doctor or DSN with a view to increasing your medication.

As an aside, I have always had the problem of high readings in the mornings ranging between 8.5 and 10.0, but the rest of the day I am always in the 4s or 5s, I recently tried taking my long acting insulin half an hour earlier st night and reduced it by 5 units, nince then my readings have been between 6.7 and 7.5, I know this doesnt help you because you are not on insulin, but it shows nothing is straight forward with diabetes. 🙂

Best wishes

John.

Speak to your doctor about an increase in your medication.

It may also be Dawn Phenomena. It is a long time between your last meal of the day and your first meal of the day so your body thinks no food is comming. As your organs need energy to keep working, the liver dumps glucose into your blood stream to provide that energy. I'm not sure how to deal with it quite, but thought it was something to be aware of.

Hi Donna, another option is to have a small protein snack before bed.
As others have said though t does sound as if you need an increase in your meds to help you out.

I used to have the same problem, and was told it was "rebound", i.e. the liver releasing glucose as it has been triggered by a rapid decrease in blood sugars while sleeping. I was told to decrease my medication slightly. This worked for a while but in the end I had to take another medication on top of the one I was alresdy taking. My morning readings are now between 5 and 6.
Kelly.
