Dx in July 1992. How long have you been diabetic , asked the GP after a routine urine sample.

Best advice - Jennifer's Smart Advice of course ( see Stickies in Newbie thread),ten years after dx unfortunately.

25th August 1994

Diabetes comes first - when you're looking after yourself properly you can enjoy life but if you don't look after it then it will make you suffer.

Type 1 since December 2000

Not sure about the advice bit though 🙂

Dx2 about 2002 never been given advice but have found this site very useful!

Diagnosed 1991.

Best advice: Test. Test. Test

The sooner you are diagnosed the better.

26th May 1988, was a long time ago I was forty-one. It was the Thursday before the Bank Holiday I went to see my doctor told him I was always thirsty and had an idea it was diabetes. Sent me to Hospital they kept me in, put me on tablets after a couple of days sent me home but no good went onto Actrapid & Monotard and never looked back. The Diabetic nurse is your best friend they know all do as your told and you will be right as rain!

1981 when diagnosed. Plenty of advice but none that sticks in my mind.

8 years, don't panic, live your life and remember everyone is different, what suits them might not suit you, listen to your body.

Diagnosed March 2001, whilst having severe ketoacidosis,
Advice? Can't cut your toenails😱 from a non diabetic nurse, mind you!
Probably the dafne course.

diagnosed whilst ten weeks into my first pregnancy as a type one in 2000, i knew that tiredness and needing to wee was a sign of diabetes but as i was pregnant thought it was because of that! my advice is try and put your needs first as much as possible although i obv have a duty to put my kids first i have to make myself a close second or i wont have enough energy to cope with them lol

1989, told I was also pregnant in the same phone call form my doctors surgery, sent into the hospital told to take an overnight bag, but didn't get discharged for 3 weeks😱

There's no such thing as 'eat what you want'

I'm approaching my 8th 'D' Anniversary this month.
Don't know if this is the best advice I've been given but "being diabetic doesn't mean having to cut out all sugary foods from your diet, just eat them in moderation".

1995 for me.

I don't remember any particular gems of advice, but I do remember the worst.

On being diagnosed, my GP packed me off to some Harley Street consultant (BUPA were paying) to check my eyes. This idiot told me that there was "a 100% probability that I would have retinopathy within 10 years". Just what was needed when you're trying to come to terms with a new diagnosis.

Needless to say that 17 years later I am still free of retinopathy, and I never went to see that consultant again.

(Before you ask, I have an annual eye scan and recently had a full inspection by a Moorfields consultant.)
