Dad had fasting blood tests taken lasts week both of us thought this would include his HbA1c but found out this morning this part of the test wouldn't be done until the 6mth mark which is May.

We were with the nurse this morning who was very happy with dad and his diet/exercise regime. His fasting blood result was 5 or 5.? She didn't write this one down and I was so tense I didn't take the exact figure in but know she was really pleased with this part of the results.

His total cholesterol is now 4.3 LDL being 0.58 sorry I only have x2 figure break down but know she was very pleased as this has come down from 1.72 on DX of diabetes.

He has lost more weight :( BMI now 19.4 waist was 34 but now 29 although we have to consider the exercise he does for BG levels which in turn burns up calories and dad has a high metabolism. He has never been overweight but each time now his weight has dropped. He eats a lot and very healthily although doesn't have as many potatoes or bread as he used to have (he could eat more potatoes and an exra slice of bread - we are just a bit worried about adding more)
Nurse has suggested an extra small potato and maybe another 1/2 slice of bread to see if this helps. Will be doing this but testing to make sure it doesn't send his readings up.

He added nuts and a snack at night although this hasn't helped to out weight on. Still need to get a little weight gain, good thing is his muscles seem solid now so at least exercise is doing something.

Blood pressure was very low today (no symptoms) nurses has made an appointment for Thursday to see the Dr to have his heart medication reviewed as he may be able to reduce his BP tablets now that he is exercising so much it may be he doesn't need as much if any of this tablet now. Will have to see what Dr says but hope it might mean less medication. He definitely didn't have white coat syndrome today!

Overall the nurse was really pleased with how much dad has been able to do so far with diet/medication. It's hard work with meals etc but when we heard that dad was doing really well it's all worth while. Just hope I can help dad to gain weight without detriment to his diet.

Only for self monitoring blood testing we wouldn't have refined his diet as much as we have. The only processed food I buy now is bread. No one would believe the amount of veg I buy for dad each week, in fact I need a second fridge now to store everything I use for cooking his meals all week. I only have one tiny section for skimmed milk the rest belongs to dad.

The best thing is dad was able to tell the nurse he was in good form (it's me who suffers from worry and stress!) so pleased dad feels well just hope the Dr can sort out his BP

Pippin, what great news about your Dad! All the hard work has been worthwhile and now you have the proof 🙂 I know you worry about his weight, but his BMI is pretty close to what mine was when I was somewhat fitter than I am now - how does his current weight compare to when he was a younger man? Remember that BMI is just an indicator and a fairly rough guide to what is 'healthy'.

I am sure you will get more very good news when his next HbA1c comes around! Well done to you both! 🙂

That's really good news Pippin. It just goes to show how much your hard work has paid off. Congratulation to you Dad who has also been putting in a lot of effort.

Thank you Northerner
I think dad was about 9 stonish when he was young lol although would have been more towards 10 stone when he ate as many potatoes and as much bread as he needed! He never had a sweet tooth for buns etc although did enjoy rice pudding......

Almost sure she said 53.5kg today he looks thinner although I don't think his face is as guant as it was....he has a healthy glow like a fairy 😉
His diet is organic meat and veg wherever possible not that this is any less fat etc but I try to keep it as healthy as I can. He would have been more solid before so this makes the weight issue a bit of a worry although dad is feeling healthy and wouldn't want to feel he was fat now. He has given away all his 34" trousers as he knows he wouldn't be the same size again.

New BG monitor has just arrived as the last one was giving weird results so they sent. New one just in case. Unfortunately the cross trainer has something wrong with it now. Waiting for the sports shop person to ring as it seems to be stuck in a high gear making it almost impossible to work out :(

He has gone for a walk to make sure he can have dinner!

Thank you for all your support and off course the diabetes fairy makes both of us smile. The one about two different readings was most applicable the other night!

Well done Pippin, you deserve a medal, because you stuck at it with your dad and did everything you could to get him on track. Maybe its now time for you to relax a little and not worry so much having now seen the results are in range and things working well, good luck to you both.

John.

Apologies margie and Gail1 I didn't see your replies when posting mine 😱 iPhone on forum is difficult by the time I typed your replies had been posted. Thank you very much I admire how all of you coping with diabetes and learn a lot from the help you post on the forum.

ukjohn thank you for your reply too I'm really pleased with dad and the fact he puts up with me being really fussy! I have almost forgotten what relaxing is although dad is helping me and supporting me through a situation with my own health. We have moved his evening meal time earlier now and this is helping me to be able to unwind a bit when I know meals are over for the day. I have a lot of strength to build up but between the both if us I think we will look after each other! Dad is a lot more understanding now about health issues.

Thank you everyone really sorry I missed the replies before I went to make dad's dinner.

He has to work out for his dinner 😉 thank you cherrypie diabetes has taught both of us a lot of things and really helped dad to be involved with his diet, helping me as much as he can with shopping/preparations. Hopefully we will get the cross trainer fixed soon, they didn't ring back today.

Hi Pippin,

That is fantastic news - well done to you and your dad. So pleased all your hard work has payed off. Well done x

Thank you Amanda a lot of our efforts are from your example of dedication to treating your diabetes. I really hope you are feeling a lot better and will enjoy your spa day, sounds wonderful!

One point of interest although it's most likely everyone knows this....but dad mentioned Gretchen's book about seeking advice of a professional regarding exercise. Apparently dad would have been eligible for a x12 week course at a leisure centre funded by the NHS although this isn't what dad was thinking as it is more for people who find it hard to start exercising, to show them the benefits for their diabetes control. They can then continue paying for sessions etc

Not too sure if anyone would find this info useful and perhaps enquire in their area to see if a scheme like this is offered. It may not be the same on the mainland but thought I would mention it in case anyone new to diabetes may not be offered this and it is available.

Hi Pippin.

I have been on that course, it is called "Exercise on Prescription", you must get refered by your GP, it is subsadised by the NHS, who also provide a trainer to supervise and develop a training schedule for you, its not really free but the payment is very low, I was paying ?3.50 per visit, not sure if that is still the same price now. I did not lose one ounce of weight.😡

John.
