after reading another thread about BG levels it made me think of a dilemma I've had when my levels are high.

so..... when your levels are high is it best to give in and sleep?

or...... go and do some exercise to get it down again?

I'm type 2.... so maybe it is different for type 1s

For a type 1 or T2 injecting, if there's no insulin 'on board' then exercising will just send the BG higher. So we'd need to inject or make sure there was still active insulin in the system.

For a typical non-injecting T2, assuming some pancreas function, you could exercise and it should bring the BG down I would have thought. With a possible delay until the insulin gets through the system.

I'm not sure if it is the same for typ 2 but for type 1 my DSN told me that if your BG is over 13 you shouldn't exercise until it is below 13. I only give in to sleep when I've had several days of badly fluctuating BGs.......but that can happen to me quite often if I don't get things right because of the gastroparesis

thanks Amanda.... it is just that when my BG level gets into double figures all I want to do is sleep but force myself to exercise. infact just earlier in the week I was up to 11 and 'punished' myself on the Wii for having lovely french bread lol.
haven't been really high for quite a while but if I get to 13 or above I just CAN'T keep awake and have to give in and sleep. when I wake there is an improvement in BG level... but can sometimes sleep for over 2 hours 😱

Higher BGs will generally make you feel sleepy. It is always better for your body if you can bring it down with exercise, but there will be times when you can't or are just TOO tired.

It should come down by itself, but if you can avoid the spikey foods or maybe eat them with some protein (egg, meat, etc) or some cheese if you can have it, it may slow down the absorption and lower the spike.

I used to have the same problem forcing the exercise is a killer but once your out there doing it.....

I did find going for a walk initially fetched my numbers down but then once I'd been sat again for 1/2 hour they would creep back up 😡 This obviously was due to the type of food I'd eaten, time after I'd eaten it and the type of walk I'd done (stroll or fast walk).

I just cut right back on the foods that triggered it and now only have them as a treat. When I know I can snooze if I want to or I am going to be 100% on the go all afternoon.

Sarah 🙂
