so on thursday i got my results and it was comfirmed that i have coeliac disease! i had already been told that it was quite likely as i had the 'markers' in by blood test. i have got my head around changing my diet again just 7 months after being diganosed T1 but the thing i can't help but think is whats next? and why has my body gone on self distruct mode? am i just going to get more and more autoimmune disease? i really hope not! if anyone could recommend any good books for coeliacs would be a massive help! 🙂

Hi Lou, sorry to hear you have another thing to contend with :( It is much more common to get another autoimmune disease once you have one - perhaps the other most frequent one is thyroid problems, although I think that can be treated fairly easily with pills. Hopefully you won;t suffer from that though.

I read a very good introductory book about Coeliac disease, my review is here:`

Also, our member David H has a website for Coeliacs at:

🙂

Indeed. I was also tested for Coeliacs as I had some of the 'signs'. But that came back negative and I was then told shortly after that I had hypothyroidism. So a Thyroxine tablet a day is needed to help fix that.

Just because we have 1 or even 2 autoimmune diseases, it doesn't mean that we will get more, it's just we have a higher risk of developing others. Try not to worry about what might or might never happen and just take it a day at a time getting your head around and dealing with the the spanners your body has currently thrown into the works.🙂

Hello Lou,

I'm coeliac too! But with me that came first, I have been coeliac for 16 years!!!! (since I was 4) Only diabetic for four years so far.

Anyway, I would most definately sign up for Coeliac UK, they send you a great welcome pack including a directory of foods we can eat. Secondly, sign up with Juvela they send you free food! I even got some 🙂

Supermarkets are fantastic these days anyway, you should not have a problem with eating most foods that you love!! Fortunately for the D cakes aren't my thing since I never had them readily available to begin with "]. Except wraps aren't yet existing in the coeliac world but I had a really successful go at making some the other day! They were awesomeeee, going to make enchiladas with them today 🙂

Let me know if there is anything else you want to know!

While coeliac disease is more common in people with type 1 diabetes than those without, there's no certainty that you will get more than 2 auto immune conditions - 2 is enough for most people, but equally people survive with the cards they are dealt.

One of my friends with T1D and coeliac disease reckons the most important thing is to like cider so he can drink pints in pubs after long hikes! Plus he researches gluten free foods suitable for backpacking and writes for Backpackers Club journal. Not sure if that would be of particular interest for you, but club URL is http://www.backpackersclub.co.uk/

i am not looking in to getting anymore auto immune disease but do want to be aware of them just incase and if i do have any signs i can be on it, unlike diabetes that i prob lived with well over 3 months before i saw anyone 🙂
thanks lizabetic i have justed signed up for both of them and can not wait for more info and samples as for the price of the free from ranges i don't want to be spending loads of money if it doesn't taste so great! lol

have just emptied my cupboards of all food that contains gulten, and gave it all to my friend who was only to happy with 3 carriers of food!
so far the most upsetting thing was finding that worstershire sauce and brown sauce contained gluten so need to go out and find an alternative to these as not sure i can survive with out them 🙂

Life Worchester Sauce is Gluten Free as is Granovita Brown Sauce, Best place to start is Sainsbury's Free From Aisle.

Because it's in the free from isle it may not be gluten free.

For example:

Mrs Crimbles Dutch apple cake is WHEAT FREE but not Gluten Free other prooducts could be only dairy free or egg free or yeast free etc etc, you still need to check labels.

Being a Coeliac and a Diabetic is a 'Double Whammy' because Gluten Free flours are all carbs (Rice, Potato, Tapioca etc) only use certified Gluten Free flours, cross contamination could be your downfall.

Anything you need to know on the subject just ask you could also click the links at the end of this post. The Irish Coeliac is a fairly comprehensive site as regards information, The Diabetic Coeliac is a site addressing both conditions ( haven't updated in a long time)

my boyfriend has been tested for that, we are just waiting for the results, if they are come out positive with it not sure how he is going to cope, he's a typical eat anything kinda bloke :/ oh well, what a nice ill couple we make lol.
