I have been very good for the past 6 months and haven't had any chocolate, cake, biscuits, savouries, dairy, alcohol etc... and have very worked hard to get down from 13stone to 9stone 11 and reduce my HbA1c from 7.2 - 6.

My DN has ordered me, yes ordered me to have 1 treat this christmas, not before or after but on christmas day. The problem I have is 'what?????'

I just can't think what that should be...

What a dilemma......

Oh, I'll be having lots of treats:
  1. Turkey (without skin)
  2. carrots
  3. Brussels sprouts
  4. Sausages wrapped in bacon, but without the bacon... or the sausage :(
Seriously, though, tempted as I shall be by Christmas pud (albeit not quite as tempted as if my Nan had made it), trifle, boxes of Celebrations and all the rest, for me there's one absolute diet-busting highlight. My own bread sauce.

Why ever not for the sausage and bacon? There's no carbs in the bacon and as long as you get a proper sausage minimum carbs in that as well.

Only because I'm going to be getting my cholesterol numbers along with my HbA1c this week, and I've a feeling Doc's not going to like them 😱

YYYYYYYYYUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMM I love sprouts; sprouts; sprouts.......
I'm having turkey, 2 roast potatoes (aunt bessies - because not cooked in goose fat); veg, stuffing and loads of..you've guessed it...sprouts.....

Hope you're appointment goes well - its daunting isn't it...

Well for me, were I you - it would either be cheese straws or a big fat whipped cream filled meringue.

I'd be careful with what you choose and don't go for the 'obvious' or you might be disappointed. Your taste buds will have altered in their preferences over the past few months, so what you used to enjoy (and what you may still crave) may turn out to be unsatisfying. The only pleasure you might get is that you might realise that you no longer desire something you thought you couldn't live without!

So, I would go for something relatively healthy that you can enjoy both for the taste and also because it's not simply the most decadent or rich/sweet thing. Perhaps a fruit cocktail and ice-cream. Let us know what you decide! 🙂

I gave up chcocie once for lent, then opened my easter egg excitedly and was very upset by the lack of yummy.

I love cheese and biscuites, wouldnt be christmas without them.

We never do the norm on christmas always have a turkey curry from the indain, with all the trimmings 🙂 very high carb so think it might be too much for you haha.

Its a real dilemma for me because there really isn't anything I've missed - I had a packet of crisps a few weeks ago and haven't craved them at all; I did have a bacon sandwich (grilled) on Saturday and again although nice I haven't wanted one since...

What is worse a) glass of bucks fizz (small) with christmas breakfast; b) a glass of wine with Christmas dinner or c) apple crumble with custard.

Although, this week I have been craving strawberry creme chocolates....

I'd go for the apple crumble. In fact, now you've mentioned it, it's all I want!!! 😱 😉 Definitely the 'worst' carbwise.

Actually, yes, I'd probably even trade in the bread sauce for apple crumble 😉

ok - apple crumble with custard or ice-cream....

You do realise I'll probably end up having neither...... but then I could have a massive bowl of sugar free jelly with ice-cream.....🙂

Hehe! I love the way you're so reluctant to treat yourself! 🙂

Treats for Christmas

This is my first Christmas under my diabetes food regime and I have been thinking about the "treat" question. So many people want me to treat myself but I am not going down the obvious route of the chocolate, cake or pudding route.

I suspect that my palette has changed to the extent that many sugary so called treats would be an oversweet unpleasant let down, and if not then perhaps a first step in the wrong direction if I was tempted to repeat the treat over the holiday period.

No, I have reached a stage where I can happily watch other people around me eating those things without much more than the odd twinge of temptation. So this Christmas my treats will be things like extra smoked salmon, and delicious savories and perhaps one just one piece of a dark bitter satisfying chocolate... I might stretch to a larger than normal cheese ration...

If you really want to say " to H*** with the carbs" I'd go for a huge chunk of homemade Christmas cake- I mena a really dark rich one laced with brandy and covered in thick marzipan and royal icing- but might be awkward if your on no insulin or medication to compensate. As an insulin usser, for me this would be a very special treat as the carbs would be phenomenal

Before I was diagnosed I used to buy slabs of marzipan and eat them whole! 😱 Those days are long gone...:(
