Hi guys. Thought I'd pop a post on here cos I feel like I'm struggling a wee bit. After being diagnosed with IGT in May, I felt determined to take myself in hand and sort myself out. Since then I have lost two and a half stone and managed to keep my bg levels pretty good. BUT I had a 'big' birthday in early November and decided to treat myself a little. I have had a couple of breaks away, a party and now Christmas is looming! I am struggling to keep myself on the straight and narrow and although most days I am good, I have had a few slips on the diet and am struggling to stay on track. I haven't been to the gym for a month because I had an exam last week, a school trip to France with 42 kids last weekend and have so much to prepare for, for family visiting at Christmas! It's all so overwhelming and I really don't want to lose control. Does anyone else ever feel this way and if so, how can I get re-focused, especially at this time of year?!! Haven't even gone to the works Christmas 'do' tonight to avoid temptation (just made an excuse). Any advice appreciated. Katiex

Can you try and fit a walk in for half an hour each day? It's good to get some quiet time to yourself, so good fr the soul as well as the blood sugars! 🙂 I'm sure being so busy will have been using lots of energy anyway, but some sort of regular routine, however small, can really help and it will be easier to extend it when all the rumpus is over 🙂

Thanks Alan. Sound advice. I do walk the dogs at least once a day (husband does the other). However, lack of motivation and energy has led to this being a hurried affair rather than an enjoyable one. I'm so jiggered in the evenings that everything seems insurmountable and the temptation to nibble on something sweet is overwhelming at times! I'm managing to avoid hitting on the chocolate etc. I just seem to have lost my momentum! I WILL resolve to make the evening walk longer and brisker and attempt to regain some of the motivation I have lost. I need a motivational pep talk!! Keep nagging me!🙂 Katiex

Can you fit anything in early in the morning? I usually like to go for my run in the morning as it helps to energise me for the day and also helps to make me more virtuous and less likely to succumb to sloth and gluttony later in the day! 🙂 I know it's difficult currently with it being so dark so late into the morning, but there's less than a week of that until the shortest day and the days will start getting longer again! Hurrah! :D

Roll on longer days! I hate the winter dark nights! Just come back from a walk with my dogs and feel better for that. Thankyou. Hard in the mornings. I start work at 7.30am and already struggle to get up, out and in work for that time! I suppose I could try and get up half an hour earlier, but that would mean getting up at 5.30am instead of 6😱 I love my bed! Still, no gain without pain! Any tips on avoiding the naughty munchies? Seem to be craving chocolate these days, which previously wouldn't really have bothered me! Strange that!!🙂 Katiex

Not sure if it would help at all but if you could find a couple of good, engrossing books to read, they might help you focus on something in the evening, maybe with a soak in the bath. You can't just reach for nibbles then and it kills an hour. 🙂

I find crosswords are another good thing for focusing on to avoid your mind wandering.

All very sedentary but hard to do much with rubbish weather.

Only other thing is maybe Wii or similar and if you can get your OH to compete, then you have an added incentive.:D

Hi Katie, sorry I haven't been around much; I too had an exam on Monday and have found since my 2nd DN appointment I've felt a little low. I fully understand how you feel because you've put so much time; effort and emotion to get yourself where you are today; you are doing brilliantly and really shouldn't beat yourself up; everyone has off-moments and its just about re-focussing. Christmas is a time for families to come together; and a treat on the day is well deserved; just do it in moderation. When you feel like a munchie just think of the weight you've lost and also ask yourself whether you really want it; if you're hungry have some fruit; if you do want chocolate; have a small square and hide the rest in the fridge.

Enjoy christmas; enjoy the time with your family and most importantly enjoy the time off work....😛 you deserve it. Having a treat now and then isn't going to do you any harm;

In respect of the exercise; just build it up again slowly; walk 15-20 mins a day; run up and down the stairs; do the hoovering (or come and do mine....🙂. Its all small steps that make big strides.

Be proud of your achievements; you're doing brilliantly and you will get back on track....2012 is a new year....Katieb's year....🙂
