The 'recommended doses' calculations should only ever be a starting point, and definitely not set in stone as there is so much variation. I was told that one of the calculations related to units per kilo, so in theory I should have needed to increase my insulin as I regained my weight - but the opposite happened! I've known people on here that need hundreds of units and some like me who need very little. Another calculation suggests that around 40% of your total daily dose should be basal insulin (e.g. lantus or levemir), but mine is less than 15%.

Thats what i got told, they worked out i was about 72 kilos and used a starting point of 0.5 units per kilo = 36 units. 50% of which should be lantus. so started 18 units lantus and 6 units nova rapid 3 times a day. Only after i discovered had to adjust for food/excercise heat and also how fast each persons metabolic rate is. up until the sart of this week that came down to 15-20 units a day and now only 2-4 units nova r and no lantus. Dont konow if honeymoon period or if just eating well and doing excercise - wait and see

I was told by my consultant recently that a healthy pancreas in a non-diabetic person produces about 20 units of insulin a day, so it would appear that yours is currently almost fully up to speed 🙂 He also said it's almost certain my pancreas is producing some insulin although I'd need a C-peptide test to determine how much. Exercise has a big influence on your sensitivity to insulin, so it's good that you are getting regular exercise. 🙂

i asked for a c-peptide test, but consultant said i didnt need one and just wait and see what happens. i think they should do these as standard in newly diagnosed people during the first year.

Hi Brett and a warm welcome to the forum x

My consultant was the opposite - he said he would like to do one for me but the PCT won't fund it as clearly I have excellent control and it wouldn't alter anything, but he does find my case interesting and is going to look up my hospital notes to see what happened and what tests were done (he's only been my consultant for the past year).

Hi Brett,

Welcome to the forum. I'm new to this forum too. Re your posting can totally related. I started on nova rapid 8 units a day my readings were similar to yours. mid mornings in 10s but by lunch time I was at 3.5 or so. I was on that type of insulin for 2 months then I was switched to 2 units of humalog after each meal and lantus was 8 in the evening. I've had to increase the dose to accommodate ( excuse spelling if wrong) increasing sugar levels with the doses and now I adjust the nova rapid to carbs I eat at each which is generally 6 to 12 and lantus is at 19. It takes some getting used to 🙂
