Relationship to Diabetes

Am steaming, having read the posts about e-petitions, sent a link about the second one to my friends asking them to sign the petition and explaining why...
Had this email from a friend who is an optician.....GRRRRR

Diabetes is a huge problem but is something that can be avoided in many people.

I have to say, I am not in agreement on this petition- one doesn't need machines to test what foods you need to avoid.

One needs a thorough understanding of exactly what you're eating (GI values) and of course discipline which in my experience dealing with diabetics on a daily basis at work, is lacking (which is why more than half the population are overweight).

Weight gain is a real cause for diabetes and it is a life-style choice .

Eat sensibly and healthily, good exercise daily and your endocrine glands will be far stronger.

I think it would be more helpful to petition the government to advertise on prime time TV what people should and should not be eating and that exercise is absolutely essential etc and to hit hard the terrible damage that people can do to their bodies by over eating and not exercising

spend time on looking after YOURSELF (and less time in thinking gadgets-can-do-it-for-me), learn to love yourself and treat your body like a temple

Well, they would be crossed off my Christmas card list with no delay! What a poorly informed and rather offensive response! I suspect this person would change their tune if they were diagnosed 😱 😡

By saying "Diabetes is a huge problem but is something that can be avoided in many people., the author isn't saying that diabetes can be avoided in all people. In general speech, "most" means majority, not all.

And statement applies only to type 2 diabetes, not type 1. Personally, I'm used to being in the minority (only about 10% of people with diabetes have type 1) and letting comments pass over, although it's far tougher for kids in the playground.

However, as well as advocating sensible eating & increased physical activity to prevent becoming overweight or obese, genetic predisposition should also be mentioned - some groups, such as people with origins in the Indian sub continent run greater risks at lower BMI than general UK population.

I think the main objection I have is that the author says that testing is not necessary - you just need to understand GI. Understanding GI will help, but it will not tell you what you personally can tolerate of supposedly low GI foods. I would like to know if this person leads a faultless life, nutritionally speaking and with the amount of exercise they get. So many people who blame people for their diabetes should probably extract the beam from their own eye before picking splinters from others'.

I am amazed at how little is understood about the actual effects of different carbs on blood glucose.

They seem to think (DUK included) that eating the low GI list of foods will magically give 7s and 8s after a meal. Are there no type 2 dieticians who can change the perceptions from within ?

And what an offensive reply.

Rob

Hope I do not go to see that person for my yearly check up.

Rob

I am amazed that I managed to finish reading that without putting my fist through the monitor lol:D

Outrageous ....there are far more folk who are obese without Diabetes than there are with
stats ....23% of uk are 'obese'
there are 50,893,320 adults in uk
therefore there 11,705463 obese people

there are 2.3 million diabetics ...T1 acount for approx 10%(thank you copepod)
thus there are approx 2 mill T2 1.5 etc etc

....so there are approx 9 1/2 million obese people without diabetes ...

also if i followed the original advice re 'heathy eating i would be eating what i did pre dx....i was a real fruit bat had me museili every morning ..or porridge and ate good home cooked food loads of fresh veg ...little did i realise that the fruit was causing havoc with my BS ..porridge oats ..well dont even wanna go there !

"spend time on looking after YOURSELF (and less time in thinking gadgets-can-do-it-for-me), learn to love yourself and treat your body like a temple"

Maybe he should spend time getting people to look after their eyes, rather than relying on glasses...

Also - that quote makes it sound as if as soon as you get a meter, you're gonna be cured...

I can see where he's coming from though..

Yes not all obese people will suffer from diabetes but obesity does cause a lot of suffering for the individual..

Such as skin infections in skin folds.
Back problems
Joint problems
breathing problems
Heart Problems...
Fatty Liver

This is to name a few ailments associated with obesity...

Yes I am aware that not all T2's are stereo typical but it's only 20% of all diagnosed that aren't stereo typical, for the rest yes it could be said they may still have been diagnosed T2 whether they had changed lifestyles...

But statistics do seem to be constant with what has been suggested it would follow, the more obesity increases so does T2 diabetes..

So yes in many ways he's right perhaps with the right education from a early age to discourage people from over eating, and do more exercise so that they avoid being obese, avoid all the various different ailments that an obese individual could suffer is a good thing surely..

Then there would actually be more in the coffers for those that do get T2 come what may..

Hello, I think I'll text your mate and tell him what he should be doing for Mrs Bloggs eyes.

After all, being a retired insurance broker, that makes me just as qualified to make decisions on eyesight as he is to decide on Endocrinological ailments, doesn't it?

I'll say Pillock, but that's not the word I'm thinking!

just also want to point out that the dx HbA1c level for T2 diabetes has dropped over the years I think it 6.5 now (correct me if im wrong) when i was dx 3 years ago it was HbA1c of 7.0 ........no wonder the no of folks being dx has increased ,,,🙄

Ha ha ha, TW you are truly hilarious, funny as....😱

Hmmm, So going by my GI guidebook I think I'll have a huge jacket potato with baked beans for my lunch tomorrow......then again, according to my meter 😱

What a stupid and ignorant reply. I always say I wouldn't wish diabetes on anyone, but for this person I'd make an exception. See if they are so blaze then.

I like many others have followed a portion controlled, low calorie, low salt, low fat, low GI diet for years. I don't smoke or drink much and I've always been very active. I'm a bit overweight it's true, but not for want of trying. I still ended up getting diabetes though, which I think is more to do with almost every female on my maternal side having had it before me. XXXXX

I found this both annoying and patronising and this non person is an arrogant misinformed (lots of swear words)

Wow, that's insensitive from a so-called friend.

Even if we accept that plenty of type 2's wouldn't have diabetes if they lost weight, nobody chooses to be obese, there are almost always other causative factors. Telling an overweight person to "have more self-control" without giving them any tools to achieve that is as useful as telling a depressed person to pull themselves together, or a Daily Mail reader to think for themselves 😉

What an ass.

I'm afraid this is what comes of asking friends and family - without knowing whether or not they support our cause - to endorse our ideas on a petition. However from what they have written to you they sound a very pompous person and I wouldn't wish to be their friend - what they have written to you is very insensitive.

i dont think i would like to speak to this person again not everybody with tipe 2 are overweight and sometimes can happen for other reason as well
