I wondered if any of you have experienced problems following the flu jab. My daughter had her flu jab on Friday and over the last couple of days has had rising blood sugar. Her pump basal rate is currently on 140% and she has been around the 10-12 mark all day despite many corrections. I am trying to decide if the flu jab is to blame of if her insulin requirements are changing??

Hi Elaine sorry to hear about your daughters plight, I seem to remmember quite a few members reacting badly to the flu jab this time around.I cant find the threads right now as the search bar is throwing me nothing back but i dont think is alone in getting higher BS levels.
I hope they drop back to a more balanced level soon

As Steff says, the flu jab can seem to fool the body into reacting as if it were infected despite no live virus being used.

If you're at all worried, see your GP in case there's something else coincidental. She may have picked up a bug at the surgery. They're the worst place to be for catching things. 😱

I hope she feels better soon.

I'm not overly worried at the moment, we are quite used to readings in the high 20's when she is ill. She could well have picked something up whilst at the surgery, I didn't think of that! I'll monitor her for the next couple of days and speak to the diabetes team if things don't improve. Thanks Rob/Steff.

I had elevated levels for a few days after my jab. Hopefully things will return to normal soon 🙂

My levels were fine following the jab, don't know why it effects some but not others:confused:

It's not always the flu jab to blame, as it's also possible that the days post jab may coincidentally also be days of a cold virus. As long as blood sugar levels are kept relatively OK, the cause isn's so important. As you say, Elaine, waiting rooms are a good source of bugs!

Hi, my daughters BGs have been erratic too since flu jab, also had mild lingering cold, but now into week 4 and thinking same - is it her needs changing and needing more basal/bolus overall. So frustrated with it at the moment, too many variables as usual 😡

Hi Hanmillmum

We are also onto week 4 of unpredictable readings, a viral infection kicked it all off followed by a week of slowly dropping blood sugar, things seemed to be steadier for a week but we were away at half term and the different food/activity made it hard to tell. I would like to be much more aggressive with the insulin, Kate also uses a pump so we have the flexibility to up basal rates considerably but I have to be cautious as Kate has suffered many severe hypos over the last 12 months. I really don't envy you having to deal with all this with such at little tot.

I had really bad levels about a week to 10 days after my jab. I was on 150% basal and still having to have lots of corrections too. Things have gone back to normal now - it was v v weird, I have never had a reaction like that before (if it was due to the jab). There seem to be a number of people posting on here about reactions this year.

I'm worrying too that if it is just the cold/virus then she is going to drop to her boots when returns to normal, particularly concerning if I am at work and this occurs. Hard to know what to do for the best isn't it? Lets hope we get back to some decent levels soon all of us! 🙂
