Im getting really upset and frustrated with diabetes today after finally getting some new insulin sorted yesterday things have gone really strange!

Woke up on 9mmols so took 6 units of insulin (normally this would allow for 60 carbs) so i had a 15 carb brekkie so i knew the insulin would bring me down within range before lunch....well at lunch i was 10! So had one tiny sanwich and gave myself double the amout of insulin that i would have usualy....3 hours later i test again and i am 11!!! 😡😡

I dont know whats going on :'( i broke down at work coz i was just really upset about it all, i did a control test which was normal, and i also did the squirting 20 u of insulin in the cap test and all was normal!

i didnt even have my mid morning snack which i usualy need unless i go hypo at around 11am! no nice or naughty things either iv been good and said no to everything which is why this is even more frustrating!

Iv come down to 7 now but thats only because of my cleaning job i dont think the insulin done anything!

The only possible reason i can think of is the fact i had my flu jab last week and that could be affecting it???? although i dont think it did last year...and also another reason may be that i am coming down with something but i dont feel ill atall! I havent cheated myself today either,

All opinions welcome coz im giving up soon i swear!

Errrrrmmmmm.

wish i could think of something other than the illness thing. but even then, it's a lot of insulin for not much carbs to keep you at 10 😱

if it were me, i'd be off to the gp or clinic for some more insight. i presume you've done your normal basal and checked that similarly ?

Yes checked my basal pen as well and was all fine...even gave myself an extra unit of basal this morning coz of all the palava of yesterday..i just cant work it out!

the only other variable that i can think of in this case is stress. It can shoot you up very high and keep you there.

if you can't find a reason, don't be afraid to contact your care team. for now, try and keep your doses high as long as you don't suddenly drop again.

Does your time of month affect you - could it be that ?

or are you taking any other meds that could be upping things. Maybe your body is demanding more energy to repair you after all your dental treatment.

Only thoughts and I hope things settle for you soon.

oooo. dental treatment. didn't think. could you have infection ?

Nope nothing to do with time of the month either and iv only had two treatments and not recently.....i guess i will just have to wait and see what tomoro brings but i just cant understand it and its making me upset...which i guess doesnt help matters :(

Reading other forums on the net, it seems as if a lot of people are having unexplained higher than normal blood sugars.

Sooooo perhaps it's the weather throwing a spanner in the works. Many find they need to change ratio's and basals as winter aproaches.
You also have to remember that you are not a machine so wont work like clockwork either. 😉 So stop blameing yourself when things don't tick just right.

Hmm iv been googling about the flu jab and reading forums...a lot of people experiencing higher blood sugars a few days to a week after their flu jab...i had mine last tuesday so maybe this could be the reason or maybe im just desperate for an explanation?! :(

I gave myself double insulin for everything tooday and still not below 10, surely ratios cant change that much and overnight??

I had higher levels after my flu jab last Saturday. Normally I never go into double figures, but I had a 14.3 on Saturday night - no other explanation apart from the flu jab!

My levels have been stupidly high in the last few days mainly 15 to 20 despite numerous corrections. I has mu flu jab last week. I had not thought that could be the reason, interesting

The flu jag causing highs did not occur to me. I had mine on Monday, and bloods went sky high, just starting to come down today. I was sure my blood was sky high due to being pregnant, but now I think it could also be the flu jag.

Keep at it and I hope it all settles soon. Xx

D_G I had just the same sort of nonsense with a 'nothing much' tiny illness a few weeks back. Double rapid insulin and extra basal. Of in doubt change cartridges too. Could be 'off' insulin?

Go careful when things start returning to normal... I got through an entire bottle of lucozade one evening with basal and meal dose just a bit high 😱

Hmm well this could possibly be the explanation i was looking for then! I feel a bit better now that i have a possible cause!

I have half term next week so will take the oppurtunity to do some basal testing and also re-do my ratios to make sure nothing else can go wrong 🙂

good luck, I hope you find the answer. Sounds like the flu jab is a safe bet.

You have my sympathies - nothing more annoying than thinking you're doing everything right, and it still coming out wrong!

D_G, lot's of possibles already given, have you considered that you have injected into a lipohypertrophy site? This has happened to me before. If so, a large injection can have little or no effect on your BS.

I was going to say exactly what Phil65 has just said - I already knew I had a couple of definite lipos and my thighs but never dreamt I had odd ones all over my midriff and tummy until I got my pump - because with the pump although the basal goes in in tiny little bits and then you put your bolus in exactly the same place, for a couple of days - it quickly becomes apparent where the bad sites are.

There is no sign of these outwardly, or if I squeeze, pummel, dig etc, no undelying anything I can actually feel. But my body knows ..... and my meter tells me - then I occasionally have a mega hypo that can last all day which can only be one of these rotten sites releasing its stored insulin.

PITA.

Right well all is back to normal now, after 9 days of constantly being high!! Had my first hypo yesterday and was really suprised lol! not been above 7 all day yay!
