New 'optical' CGM (with no consumables)

Had a comment posted on the blog today about a new CGM system which does not require any expensive consumables. Quick look at the website seems to indicate that this is very new tech, and not currently available anywhere in the world (currently seeking CE certification in EU).

I'm surprised CGM devices are not more widely available, frustrating sometimes when you consider the types of technology around, cars, 3D tvs, I phones, Ipods, apple macs etc..etc. I get impatient thinking about CGMs....how long will it take?!

It's an avertising ploy to generate money!

They are asking you to put a deposit down for an item that they give very little information about...

There isn't a clear exlination how it works, where it is getting it's Blood Glucose Value from etc... What test comparisions studies/trails have been completed..

Even though they say it's going through the EC liecencing process! So the above information should be available!

The have mentioned that the FDA but not clear wheather they have or haven't tried to get the FDA licence for it or whether it failed the FDA licencing process!

So being the doubting Thomas that I am..

I would say that it's purpose is to find investors in the product without having to sell out the company shares!

I did a Google and there are a number of similar gadgets out there that seem to be undergoing testing. The earliest mention I could see was in 2003. They all give somewhat technical explanations of the process used. I have to say, a non-invasive testing method would be very welcome but I imagine the cost is still too prohibitive for the NHS to consider.

Hmmm. The deposit $500 and the unit can be bought for $4000 (+vat)when it's released. That ain't so cheap.

It shows how it works but as you say ellie, no mention of trials or accuracy (although it says it's as accurate as existing CGMs).

I can't see the NHS investing in it just yet. Maybe in a few years when the development costs have been met and it comes down to about ?500.🙄

Well IF 'Raman Spectroscopy' works (and that surely is the big question) and is comparable to other CGM systems in terms of accuracy then $4000 is costly, but the lack of ongoing sensor costs make it very competitive in self funding terms after 1 year:

Dexcom is approx ?1000 I think, plus ?60 per sensor (approx 7 days - more if you are lucky) and the transmitter (?500) seems to need replacing every 2 years. Others will doubtless correct if I have that wrong...

If you buy it yourself no VAT if NHS buy it for you then VAT added. NHS buying it? Nope more chance of a pink pig flying overhead.
