lol sorry, that was a bit mis-leading....DAFNE is normally a week isn't it?

BERTIE is 4 days, just done once a week over 4 weeks. means you learn something, get to go away and test it for a week and then come back for more help! 🙂

Cool.........

In a way, that would of been better for me, as I actually left DAFNE with my dose still not being right........[background]

Got there in the end though..........:D

Thanks for posting Katie. I have been referred to the BERTIE course, haven't got a date yet though. I am looking forward to meeting more people and talking about diabetes, and other stuff of course :D

I hope you are enjoying BETIE and making friends as well as learning something too.

I'm tempted to ask how Mr Bassetts All Sorts are if you have met them.

Hi all,

Just for those who were interested in my first week of BERTIE course, I've written a blog about it 🙂 Not much to it really, but a start!

http://charltonangel.blogspot.com/

Think I'll be writing another post on my thoughts and challenges with carb-counting soon too!

Sounds great Katie! Thanks for giving the forum a plug on the blog - have you told the others about us yet? 🙂

I think you'll find the BERTIE course is modelled on the Bournemouth course (BDEC http://213.106.147.101/bdec2/index.shtml) rather than the DAFNE principle. I know a couple of people who have done it in real life, unfortunately I have only done the online version.

those were my thoughts exactly...i didn't want to spend a week 'classroom' learning and then not being able to apply it to 'normal' life. so far, so good!

definitely worth going Natalie. I think I waited 5 - 6 months since I was referred for it. Definitely chase them up if you haven't heard anything, sometimes we have to fight for these things!

thanks Caroline. everyone's really lovely and made a friend already. no doubt I will be befriending someone new this week as well. It's great! 🙂

Thanks Alan. Yes. One of the exercises were your dislikes and frustrations of living with diabetes, and any likes... you guys were listed on my likes 🙂 This and Circle D.

Was VERY shocked that I was met with blank faces - from the group andthe diabetes dieticians :(

still, I will be rambling on about you all more this week no doubt, and there's definitely a couple of people there that would hugely benefit from this forum. I'm going to speak to them individually this Friday and ask them to think about joining 🙂

Good to know things are going well. That is what they did at Russells Hall Hospital but we had an all dayer on a Saturday first. I think that was good as you got know the whole group. I think the week break is good because you get to practice things for a week with the DSN's office phone number incase of emergencies where you were like 😱 or :(

Plus I found the OHP diary sheets useful because it shows that no one is perfect and made me feel a lot better.

I just wish I handn't had the trouble with work booking time off for it. They now seen the benefit my Bradford factor was 90 odd and now is 8. Hopefully future diabetics will not have the battle I had.

Marc

yep that's what it is.

As i work in HR, I see it a lot!! BUT, it should be used properly...i.e. the whole company should have a Bradford score and then reasons looked at for those with a higher score than the 'norm'....it shouldn't be used to just monitor people with illnesses etc. That is discrimination. If it's used properly then often it can help HR/Management identify where people may have genuine reasons and then we can be more aware and make reasonable adjustments.

It does sound very invasive, but if sick dates are entered into a database, the Bradford factor is usually created at the click of a button, and like I said, for EVERYONE.

I'm sorry you had problems with the time off work Marc :( horrible when things are made more difficult. With any luck, hopefully now they can see the benefits 🙂

off to day 2 (or week 2 depending on how you look at it) of BERTIE this afternoon!

excited to see the group again, and to see how everyone's got on with the homework!

think we're covering exercise this week! :D

Hope it goes well and that no-one has dropped out - on my course two people didn't turn up for the second day :(
