Just had my first set of blood tests and gave urine sample. Surgery called to say they found blood in the urine and now want me to take anti biotics to knock out the infection. Thing is I did not really have symptoms of infection apart from the horrendous frequency of urination especially at night. I am on two metformin a day, and two zicron (glicazide) but have only been on meds for about three and a half weeks. I am sure they would not give me anti biotics if they are not compatible with my meds, but has anyone else found they had urinary infections without the usual uncomfortable symptoms ?
NEXT INSTALMENT TO THIS - I spoke to my GP explaining the above and he said I could hold back before taking the anti b's and see if symptoms of UTI did appear. They haven't - so I haven't taken them. I have no kidney probs (blood tested recently) and no painful symptoms and I think if one can avoid taking anti biotics and avoid the sometimes unpleasant side effects like bad stomach and unbalancing gut bacteria, not to mention the lessening of the effectiveness of HRT (and contraceptive pill in younger women), it is worth questioning the necessity for taking them!

What are your blood sugar levels like at the moment? Going to the loo a lot and urinary infections are quite common when levels are higher than normal. Many members have been on antibiotics with some reporting higher levels, but hard to know whether that's due to the infection or the pills (or both, of course!). I hope it all clears up quickly 🙂

I hope you feel better soon. I haven't had a UTI, but having needed stuff for chest infections I'd suggest taking the antibiotics as a safeguard and see how you get on. There is no harm in going back to the doctor nd having a chat or talking to your pharmacist if you are worried.

thanks to you

thanks for your reply and good wishes. It is lovely to have access to fellow diabetics although it still feels weird to even say that! I havent actually taken the anti b's yet or even collected the prescription. They want me to take them as they found this trace of blood, but I have never been diagnosed with an infection without first actually going to the doctors because of symptoms that felt like a UTI. My bg levels are not high to my knowledge although my testing is rather random and not regular. Hence my query about this. I didnt know one could have an infection and not even know it.
thanks again.

Many thanks. I suppose I will have to take them and will be interested to see if the fequency of peeing improves. I am an inquisitive and outgoing type of patient, so will talk to the doc if necessary. thanks again

Hi There

I recently had a UTI, was running to the loo a lot, but had nasty symptoms, cystitis, pain when passing urine, etc. I found my bg levels were elevated because of the infection and they have since returned to normal. However, your bg may have been too high hence the lack of symptoms? I was put on a 3 day course of Trimethoprim. Hope you're okay now?
