Hi, there are some friends that are so positive. My friend was giving me encouragement on Sunday. Bless her... she told me she takes up to 8 tablets a day (one for cholestrol) and her BG is 35. Yet she is so positive. Always working with the kids. She said the sugar is out of control, bless her......Always positive, a real gem. My situation is virtually non-existent in comparison to hers

When you say her blood sugar is 35, do you mean a finger prick test? If so, that is astonishingly high and she really needs some help - there's no reason why it should be so high, so please let her know about us or get her to speak to her healthcare team. 🙂

I will do, she tells me she is in contact with her healthcare team. I like to beleive that keeping yours sugars down is difficult. Others who know more about D than I do reckon she is spinning me a yarn.. I dont think so. I wish she wouldnt down much pepsi though....

I would have expected at a BG of 35, she would not be functioning and possibly heading for a coma.

If you don't think she's making it up then you need to get her into A&E as quickly as possible, or at least to her GP.

The thing is she has had it for 15 years, and knows far more about D than a newbie like me. She has something in the back of her eye she told me.
She seems level headed, she is a very private person, she told me she is in constant contact with her healthcare team, they are monitoring her.

It sounds like she may mean retinopathy, which can be a consequence of long-term exposure to higher than normal levels. With a great deal of respect, although she has had diabetes for many years you are always learning, so it may be that she has become set in her ways and accepting of high levels. Constant high levels might not feel as bad as occasional high levels, so she may think she is doing OK, but there may be damage being done, particularly to the fine blood vessels.

It would be interesting if you could perhaps prise a bit more detail out of her about her medication, diet and HbA1c. Drinking Pepsi, if it is the full-sugar version, is one of the worst things she can do and may be illustrative of her lack of understanding despite her long experience.

Had my final right start session today. The DSN was in, and what a difference it made! She advised me that essentially you must be aware of what you eat. I mention this because from what she told me, although it is a lot to take in, the more you watch your diet, it reduces the problems. Bearing that in mind, I will definetely ask my freind this weekend what is she eating for her BG to be 24 then 35.......

Good to hear the session went well Rustee 🙂 It takes time, but if you stick at it you will learn how to manage your diabetes well. It will be interesting to hear what your friend is eating - unfortunately some things that you might think are healthy can have an adverse effect on your blood sugars when you don't have a fully-functioning pancreas!

Hi Rustee,

Glad you had a good meeting. It can seem like a whole 'nother world out there with diabetes, but we're all here, and all learning as we go.

Please do update us about your friend. With what you've said I think most of us reading will be VERY concerned about her health.

Is she Type 1 or Type 2? (although those levels are not good for either!)

Good luck.

Hi Rustee, I was immediately admitted to hospital and placed on a drip with a BG of 33.3 If she is used to these levels it may not be apparent the damage it's doing to her but you can rest assured it will be doing something to her.
