Since yesterday I've felt really ill, high temperature have spent most of the last 24 hours in bed, my blood sugar yesterday tea time was 6.5 now as I'm off my food I didn't take any insulin, by 10pm my bs had risen to 9.5 and I took my lantus as normal, by this morning my bs was 11.3 where I had a bowl of porridge and took my humalog as normal by dinner time my bs was 13.9 I at this point doubled my humalog from 3 to 6, now heres the scary bit just checked my bs randomly and it's 20.8 (I only had a couple of roast beef sandwiches and a pack of hula hoops for lunch) up until the last couple of days my blood sugars have been in total control, can being ill affect blood sugars this much? Just seems they are rising and rising, sorry for rant but this is the first time if had some sort of bug since diagnosis

Not a Type1 but as nobody has answered yet there seems to be sick day rules that apply.

This article may help.

Hope a Type1 will answer soon and take care.

Yes, it's common for insulin resistance to increase when you are ill, so the insulin doses you are injecting usually need to be increased - this is what is known as 'Sick Day Rules' - have a look at this page:

http://www.diabetesuffolk.com/managingdiabetes/Sick day rules.htm

However, do not follow their advice about the amount of insulin to inject as this needs to be appropriate to your personal requirements, and the amounts they suggest may be too much or too little for you, depending on your normal doses. Best to contact your DSN to find out what adjustments you should make personally. Hope you are feeling better soon! 🙂

Thanks for the replies so far am also aware with my blood sugar rising to the level it has I should probably be checking for ketones but have no way of doing this, wonder if I can get the ketone strips on prescription

You should get ketone strips on px, whether it is the urine test strips (ketostix) or the blood testing ones (optium to use with ketone meter). We have had both since diagnosis it's essential testing with high BGs. Hope you're feeling better soon and get some control over those numbers. 🙂

If you can get your BG down to a more reasonable level, you'll be ok.

The higher it stays, the harder it is for your body to fight the infection, so you may find it just hangs around unless you can adjust your doses to get it back within sight of normality.

Your lantus may need a fair % increase. If you're not eating I'm not sure what this may signal your liver to do. It might pump out more glucose to compensate but I'm not sure.

Take in extra fluids because high BG will dehydrate you quicker, as well needing them for the illness and not eating.

Good luck and wash your hands before posting. We don't want it! 😱😉

*washes hands*

Feeling a bit better today, and numbers were 13.4 at breakfast and 13.6 at midday, still high but at least they are going in the right direction.

Have also had some ketostix added to my prescription which is handy, will be more prepared next time I catch a bug.

Thanks all
