I'm really alarmed now; I had 2 slices of Burgen/linseed/soya with no spread and a small tin of Heinz baked beans (reduced salt/sugar). Immediate reading was 6.9; 1hr after 10.2; 2hrs after 10.9.

These are the highest readings I have ever had - do I need to do some physical exercise to bring my numbers down?

Diagnosed August 2011; HbA1c 7.2 (D&E for next 3 months)

Hi Amanda, a little exercise afterwards would probably help, although looking closely at your numbers, you only rose 3-4 mmol/l so this wasn't a huge spike. Moreover, it held fairly steady between 1 and 2 hours, so don't panic! It might be worth repeating the meal to see if you get similar results and then perhaps try the burgen on its own, or with cheese perhaps and see what the results show. Remember, it's all about finding food combinations that work for you and it can be a lengthy process. Try not to let higher than expected figures dismay you, rather you should use the results to help build the picture of how your body is reacting. 🙂

Hi Amanda, try not to worry. It's still early days and high readings are to be expected to some extent. It took me a few months of exercise and weight loss before my readings were constantly in the range I prefered.

As Northey suggests, try the meal and check again some time. If you keep getting high readings though, then you need to tweak it. For instance, maybe it's the beans causing the problem rather than the bread. In which case avoid beans in future or perhaps just reduce the quantity and replace with something else you like to try.

The exercise will help. Maybe not there and then, but should help further down the line. I seem to remember that as you exercise the body creates more of the ability to burn glucose and so you become better at using the glucose in the blood and so become more responsive to exercise .... if anyone can confirm this thought or explain it better, I'd be most grateful though!! 😱

Andy 🙂

Thank you both; I know I'm taking things too heart especially as its early days - my appointment with the DN nurse was positive and then a few hours later I felt fearful for the future. Yesterday I had a good day using husband's credit card and then the 10.9 scared the life out me. My anxiety goes in spurts of ups and downs.

I did 8,000 steps yesterday and spent 15mins on the treadmill. My diet and weight loss is going very well - since July 1st (this year) I've steadily lost 1-2lb per week and have gone from 13stone to 11.6. Aiming for healthy BMI and weight of 10.5 by Christmas.

I re-read some of Gretchin's book this morning - so I'm going to re-look at what I eat and possibly test more; just ordered some more strips on Ebay. I also have to get the anxiety levels under control. I tested when I woke up this morning and my blood sugar was 5.7, it is normally in the 5s.

Is it true that your fasting blood test is an indication of how your sugars were the day before?

I really appreciate all your support.

Amanda xx🙂

Hi Newtothis.

I have exactly the same problem when I mix beans with either Burgen bread or a small Jacket potato. However by testing I have realised I can have a small spoonful of them with say a breakfast (with no toast). I think testing is the answer. I too only have the low sugar/salt variety but they still cause a spike. It might be worth considering the above yourself, and also maybe test again further down the line to see if anything has changed - the only problem is you start dreaming about beans on toast once you know you can't have it!🙂

Thanks Lucy, I only had beans as a swap from pitta bread and fish...I'm going to give the beans a miss for a while. Will try the bread again possibly with grilled mushrooms and tomotoes. xx

Well that's pretty ideal! 🙂

I usually start somewhere around 6.0 ish. Anything between 5.5 and 6 is a very good start to the day.
