I'm off to the Drs today (nice chap - easy to talk to) ro raise questions about my "underactive thyroid". I don't want more medication but if it can stop being so weary I'll try it.

The other thing I want to talk to him about (told to do so by my nice DSN at the hospital last week) is how very "down" I'm feeling. I've gone through (as we all have) various things in my lifetime and I've aklways said "I'm fine" but this time I'm not and I'm not good at letting my guard down and saying so. I really don't want any anti-depressants on top of all the Diabetic stuff I'm taking - any ideas ?

Hi Faith, I'm very sorry to hear that you are feeling down. I'm a bit like you in that I tend to keep it inside if I'm not feeling very happy with life and it can be hard to talk about it. It's good that you have an approachable doctor though, and hopefully he will be able to suggest something to help, other than pills. Just opening up about it may help, and if you can get help to improve your physical well-being this may be enough to lift you out of the gloom.

I hope the appointment goes well and that you can come away with a positive action plan to get the energy back into your life 🙂

Hi Vince, I hope telling us has helped you feel better.

Talk to your doctor who sounds very nice and tell him how you feel about all the pills and potions you are taking and that if you can avoid taking any more than is necessary you will. Sometimes doctors will send people for talking therapies, although I don't know much about these.

I hope everything works out well for you. You told us, so that is a step forwards.

I know what you mean, having been in that place myself more than once. I managed to get some sessions with the CPN last year and they helped enormously. Just having someone on the outside to rant at was a great release. She also helped me with some relaxation techniques that I still use.

Another thing I found quite helpful when trying to destress was some sound therapy that was given to me to distract me from the tinnitus. The RNID (now Action on Hearing Loss ) shop has a few gadgets, the one shown is what I was given by the clinic it has a range of sounds and I found the surf and rainfall ones most relaxing. They have quite a few other options though.

Mind you, it would probably be cheaper to download a few MP3s or buy a CD. I find aromatherapy also helps. I have a ceramic ring on top of the lightbulb of my bedside lamp and add a few drops of oil to it most nights.

More pills aren't always the answer, perhaps one of these things may hlep. I hope so.

Your feeling down might just be part of your underactive thyroid as depression is one of the symptoms, might mean you have to increase/start taking thyroxin, but better than going onto anti-D's meds..

Hoping it's all sorted out for you soon

Don't worry about talking to your doctor, they are unlikely to put you on pills straight away, they will want to try to find the underlying causes first which could even be you thyroid problems like Ellie said. Your doctor will listen to what you want to do about it as well as offering advice, you might want to speak to a counsellor or something if talking would help, I find it helps to share my worries.

Hope you feel brighter soon and the chat with the doctor helps 🙂

Thank you ALL so very much for your replies. You really are a great support group (and I told the Dr that I am in touch with this support group when I saw him today). I managed to pluck up the courgage to tell him how I was feeling and he said my thyroid is not yet showing levels at which they would put me on medication so they are just monitoring me for that. I am happy with that approach.

I told him that, although I am usually a happy little thing and I have lots going on in my life to be upbeat about, I feel it is the Diabetes itself which is sapping my life at present and he has suggested speaking to a cognitive behaviour therapist through the NHS at the practice so he is fixing that up for me.

Thank you all once again for your input.

Alison I will follow up the ideas you have put forward - sounds nice.

Hi Faith

I'm glad that the doctor was so helpful. I hope that you start feeling more postiive about things soon because it is horrible when you feel down. Take care x

Faith
glad the gp was helpfull, i hope that you are soon feeling tourself. Take care an remember we are always here for you
sending tou extra special hugs

Glad to hear that the GP was helpful Faith. I hope you don't have to wait too long fr the CBT and that you find it helpful. 🙂 If you ever feel like kicking the Diabetes Fairy into orbit, you know where to come and do it (although you may have to stand in line and wait your turn 😉 :D

Talking based on CBT does help mate - well at least, it helped me.

The daft thing was I could never say what we talked about cos it all seemed rather inconsequential, like when you run into a mate and just -chat. But in truth she was leading me to question the ways I felt about various aspects of my life. They were all reasonable questions who you'd expect someone who didn't know you that well or all your life, to have to ask. Tell me about your family. Are you able to tell me about your divorce. What can you tell me about your diabetes and how you feel about that. Tell me about work cos I don't know too much about your job.

Always felt good when I came out, exactly the way I do when I have run into a pal .....

Hope it works for you.

If you land up actually needing drug thereapy, I'd only say don't fight it too long because if you've got to the stage when you need it then you just do. Same with thyroid and diabetes - it's no reflection on you if your internal organs won't play nicely, nor if your brain wiring gets into a knot. Very experienced anglers can still get birds nests in their fishing line! Took 5 of us to sort one out just last Saturday! No way could Pete have done that on his own - sometimes you just need some help and he would have landed up losing quite a few metres of very expensive line if we hadn't been there, cos he would just have had to cut it off and chuck it away.

You can't do that with your innards ......

Faith,
Glad the GP was helpful hun, hope things brighten up asap.take care of your precious self xx

I can only repeat what I said earlier - you lot are so kind.

I hope the one-to-one CBT helps me because I do know I'd not be any good at opening up to a group session - on here I can't see the whites of your eyes and I can talk openly ("I'm Faith, I'm a Diabetic !!" ) without any judgement being made.

Thank you all, more than I can say. 😱

Now you're talking Trophywench - I recall the lovely holidays my late husband and I had in Southern Ireland fishing - I wasn't much good and he always had to come and sort my line out but it was great fun and so relaxing (well, for me at least !).

Your words make sense to me (and probably others on here). Thanks for your kind post.🙂

Good luck Faith, I hope things look rosier for you soon.

I was going to suggest trying a little St John's Wart, supposedly very good, but can interfere with some medicines I believe.

I've heard that can be a bit of a no-no with some meds so I'd need to get advice from our health food shop/pharmacist before I tried that. Thanks for posting though.

CBT helped me when I was suffering from anxiety attacks, and I only had to wait a week before I got my inital letter through about it, then it was about another week before I received an inital phone call.

Thank you Aileen, that's very reassuring. I'm glad to hear that you were helped. 🙂

Faith,

I'm thinking of you, but remember you have a lovely name.
My daughter's named Faith and she's the sweetest child (when not being grim) Tonight she started a BS/diet diary/wallchart for me.

My wife had a thyroidectomy last year because she'd been overactive for 6+ years. It took a long time for that to be properly diagnosed and sorted and she swears that the thyroxine levels aren't right yet. Skinny mare still lives on chocolate......

All the very best wishes,
Ian
