HI

I am going to a wedding (niece) where there is a fixed menu. As follows:-

Pate and toast

Chicken with bits including Yorkshire pudding,

Apple pie

Coffee and mince pies.

I do not wish to look unsociable but am wondering how much I should go out of my way to avoid ? leave on my plate. Or as a one off how much of it to risk, I do not like one off?s, help? I never put anything on my plate I am not prepared to eat - but since diagnosis I have never been to a meal where I have had no control at all over what is put on my plate, all 40 plates will be identical,

That is a tricky one Andrew - a shame that no alternatives are provided for any of the courses. Pat? is fairly fatty, so will slow the digestion of the toast. Chicken should be OK, but I would remove the skin and try and fill up the plate with veggies, with only a small amount of potatoes. Yorkshires will be made no doubt with white flour, although again the fat used will slow the digestion so may not have such an instant impact on your levels - although the effects may last for many hours. I imagine the apple pie will be filled with sugar, so would avoid that completely, and probably also the mince pies as the fruit in them will also be very high sugar.

I've been to a wedding where I was presented with similar problems. Although they catered for vegetarians, they didn't cater for diabetics and everything was very carby. Hope you enjoy it anyway - I'd have something before you go that is diabetes-friendly so you are not so hungry when it comes to the meal 🙂

Hi Andrew i am going to a wedding saturday but because i am on a pump i can compensate for this , in your case i would do what ever you feel comfortable doing , im sure people will understand if you do not want to risk eating more than youre happy with , im sure not everybody will clear everything on plates anyway , i think youre fine with first 2 courses and again theres lots of people that dont eat the puddings , try not to worry and enjoy the wedding 🙂

Can't add to the advice. I hope you are able to relax and enjoy the wedding and it all goes well.

Stay well away from that mince pie - 'decent' ones with 'good' filling can be up to 50g carbs for just ONE. I know this because I adore mincemeat and I miss em!! Occasionally I pick up a packet just to see if they've slimmed. Even Tescos cheap-ish ones are 30+.

However Yorkshire pudding is an entirely different animal - eg Aunt Bessie's bake it yerself small ones are 5g carb each and I reckon that's a ruddy bargain as an occasional treat for something that is so ... so ... decadent for a diabetic!

Course when you add the roasties and the mash and no doubt carrots LOL, plus of course the gravy ...... LOL

In any case, it's completely unnatural for people to even consider eating YP's with chicken, which is exactly why you won't be eating it, isn't it? (Wink !) :D

If we are having chicken and I fancy yorkshire puddings and gravy, I do them, but it is only sometimes and a treat....

I love yorkies with all roasts!!!! What planet are you on!! Ha ha
Aunt Bessies even do a range of yorkies especially FOR roast chicken so I can't be that weird...well not when it comes to yorkies!!!

Andrew-
Could you not have a word with the couple or direct with the hotel and explain you have a dietary requirement. Surely it isn't that unknown? I'm sure they could knock up some soup instead of pate and to offer a fruit salad instead of Apple Pie? If they are a decent hotel, they will be catering for a restaurant/bar food anyway and prob have such foods in stock or on the boil anyway!!!!

Good Luck and enjoy the wedding, I'd deffo explain that I have a dietary requirement and try to enjoy the meal, guilt freeeeeeeeeeee!

Mince pies

Hi

I love mince pies -- in fact I can totally pig out on them. - a couple of years ago using the pastry I posted a few hours ago I made 17 batches of 24 over November - December - they flew out - I will not make any quantity again - I guess.
but I can buy a box and it goes also apple pies given the chance,

I am on the same planet as everybody else that also likes YP's by the way - what did you think the Wink and the Grin were for?

But if I wasn't eating it because I'd already decided to eat ALL the roasties instead, then that's what I'd say when I offered it to those sitting round me, just to see who grabbed it and obviously didn't mind me -apparently - thinking they were unnatural LOL

Of course I'd then be able to tell the rest of the 40 people that Cousin Ugg was definitely dead weird .....

Food

I have offerd to get something from the venues main menu and pay for it>
Melon balls
chicken salad
sugar free lemon sordid.

that gets me sorted

Yorkshire Pudding

Hi

My Fathers family are from Huddersfield - they are horrified if YP and gravy are treated as anything other than a whole course - they believe that it is heresy to do anything else.

wow, I am so impressed with your self-control! Is it not possible to have something like this once in a while - or are you aware that it has an immediate bad effect?

Hi Andrew, that sounds much better, I would have thought that the venue should cover the cost though, it is a dietary requirement after all, I'm veggie and would hope that they would cater for me, so, as long as you tell them what you can have, I would have thought that would be ok.

For me personally I would throw the rule book out the window for that one day,its a family event and does not happen often.A treat once in a while is not going to make you a naughty diabetic.Of course its your choice as we are all diffirent but for me I would go for the set menu then again im a bad influence 😛

I'm from Brighouse, and that's just how we always ate it as youngsters, with lovely onion gravy and as a separate course! :D

I went to a lovely family wedding a few weeks ago, and initially I was a bit worried as it was a set meal.

I decided to play it by ear, had soup (chose a 'good' roll to go with), roast chicken, followed by cheesecake. That was my first desert in nearly 4 months 🙂 I thoroughly enjoyed the meal, and the copious amounts of red wine (alcohol lowers blood sugar so I was merely 'evening it out'!!) My BG in the evening, following a bit of a dance and more red wine was 4.7 to 5.4.

Definitely acceptable to have 'one off' days without causing any nasty effects!

Have a great time 🙂

Yorkshire Pudding

I mentiond this to my father this afternoon
he is impressed by anyone who treats YP as it should be - with respect -

alcohol lowers blood sugar ? does it?

Hi

I have been assuming that I should avoid Wine beyond 1 glass due to comments from the Dr - given my wifes job that is a pain. her job includes wine tasting every day.

It depends a lot on whether you are on medication or not. The main problem with alcohol is that while the liver is processing the alcohol it stops producing glucose so blood sugar levels can fall. If you are not on insulin or similar medications though, it is unlikely that they will fall very low. If this is the first time you will be drinking since diagnosis it is best to take it slowly so you can guage how it affects you. 🙂

Wine

Hi
I will be very careful - I had hepatitis about 30 years ago, first time I had a glass of wine after that I was totally smashed on 1 glass. If the result is anything like that I do not want to push it!!!
no intention of looking stupid
