Relationship to Diabetes

Last night was very weird for me i was doing really well with my numbers yesterday day time 7.8 evening 9.2 day before 8.1 in morning 10.2 in evening then about 21.40 i just totally had a really bad hyper i sorted myself out and that was ok took my bloods i was 15 i had realised i had eaten a yogurt it had 29% sugar in it i could of kicked myself , i am totally falling into this trap of concentrating on low fat and forgetting they are so many other dangers in our food , well anyway about 22.30 i had another one first time i have ever had 2 it really tired me out till about 11 i was so peed off about this , alot of you may fell the same when i say this but just when you think you got sumit sussed diabetes just takes another twist its very disheartening for me .

When I was first diagnosed and went shopping with hubby he kept picking up things like biscuits (and yoghurts) and telling me they were low or light. It took me ages to convince him low and light meant less fat.

Fat salt and sugar are put in many foods because it makes them taste better. Everyone would be better of if we could educate our taste buds to do with out these things. At home when I cook I never put salt in anything, none of us has sugar in our tea, and if I can bake gtill or boil to reduce the fat I will.

Yoghurts are a minefield all on their own. If you can, get plain low fat natural yoghurts and add fruit and nuts yourself. A little honey as a treat sometimes is OK.

yeah i tryed that for a bit i got natural yog and put apple and a handful of grapes in i was so silly i thought this is so boring and bland i went back to these yogs , but these ones i have been having are tesco probiotics ones and like i say it said low fat and i thought happy days of course the sugar content was my downfall and it learnt me a stark lesson im going to be so careful from now on

Well I think we have all fallen in to that trap steff , it is sometimes hard to

read every bit of information on the packaging when you are busy and rushing

to get the shopping done. Alot of people think we only have to avoid actual

sugar and cakes but do not take in to account that there is sugar in

everything in some guise or other , and even a healthy looking yoghurt can

be hiding as much if not more sugar than a cake . Dont let one bad day

dishearten you though , you have come so far in such a short space of time

keep up the good work .

It is information overload at times and the information on food at times is so small you need a magnifying glass to read it.

Hi Steff
I have the Mullerlite one's now as they seemed ok, I fell into the same trap and even the same yoghurts as you by Tesco's !! My blood monitor just displayed 'EEEKKK!!' after eating one of those buggers :D

Dear Steff,

Hey, these things happen, we all do daft things - I bet you won't fall into that trap again! Were your BS readings after your meal? Here's some info' from the DUK web site.

Type 2 diabetes (NICE 2008)
Before meals: 4-7mmol/L
Two*hours after meals: less than 8.5mmols/L

I like to aim for levels that are lower than these!

Warmest Regards Dodger

Hi Dodger , I was just wondering how many if any Carbs you do eat ?

we seem to be the only Low Carb / No Carbers about , ha ha we are a rare

breed it seems . I do tend to only have Carbs fron milk and mayo's etc .

Also how long have you been restricting Carbs for ? Sorry for all the questions

Thank you .. Anne- Marie .

Oh with regards to an earlier posting you made .. I am also in Ketosis most of

the time , but as I am on Insulin I can control the Ketones and avoid a trip

to A&E .

Hello Steff, I tend to eat a low fat Yoghurt fom Aldi's. Its called Brooklea Low Fat Bio Yoghurt with wholegrain. It's in a 250g carton and the carb content is22.5g per carton. It aso has different flavours. Please note this is not a commercial for them, but I do enjoy them.

Dear Anne-Marie,

I have had Type 2 since January 6th 1994. As with most type 2s I was started on Metformin but as time went by my BSs were getting worse so I decided to look into the science and so after 3 years went low carb. I started out on Atkins (sort of) but soon got fed up of weighing food to determine the amount of carbs I was eating. What I do now is severely restrict carbs until Ketones show in my urine then gradually increase them until the Keyones are not detectable - then decrease them and so on... I guess, over a week I eat just less than a 100 gms. It used to be more but after over 15 years my beta-cells no longer produce the same amount of insulin. I have, in effect replaced carbs by fat - my last triglycerides result was 0.9mmol/L. My DSN can't believe it. She thinks that fat causes high trig's but its carbs!

Warmest Regards Dodger

PS So far I have been able to avoid complications - Sorry Steff, I've highjacked your thread!

Hey thanks for getting back to me on this matter . I find it really interesting and since restricting carbs i havent really looked back , the odd times i have eaten then {hypo] i have suffered with massive raises in blood sugars which take huge amounts of insulin to bring them down again. I think i will put a thread up to just discuss Low Carb / No Carb diets etc. I do go on to Diabetes.co.uk who have a No Carbs thread / forum but i do prefer it on this site as people are more friendly I find .

Oh I forgot to say Dodger , I tend to do the Eat fat / Burn Fat approach .:D

Sorry for the highjacking steff !!!!! tee hee , ive started one for the Carbs

debabte lol :D

lol at bezza and eggle ty all for getting back to me i like to knw im not the only one making silly choices

Hi Steff
Sorry to hear you had a rough time, hope you feel better now.
Your not on your own.
I too may have fallen into the yoghurt trap....I think
I buy the muller light fat free Vanilla with sprinkle of dark chocolate from morrisons...yummy
Dunno if this is ok but the contents are as follows:
86 calories per pot
26% of calcium RDA

Nutritional info per 100g reads
Energy 52 kcal
Protein 4.og
Carbohydrates 7.2
of wich sugars 6.8
sugars naturally from milk 4.1
Fat 0.5g
of which saturates0.3g
Fibre 0.1g
Sodium 0.1g
Cacium 126mg

Theese readings look ok to me but i guess the carb side of things are way too high. I never know as i can calculate this carb thing for the life of me.

Hi I think any thing with over 5g of sugar is alot , just a personal choice of mine , but that seems alot for just basically a snack . Im sure there will be people who will disagree as i say it is just a personal choice of mine not to snack anyway.

Hi Steff, how do you feel when you are hyper?

My problem is that i don't know whats good or bad yet, ive been told to try to stay below 10... which i have today 🙂

When i was on holiday after dinner 1 night i was very upset, nearly fell asleep at the fruit machine, went for a walk to the bar to get some fresh air but didnt remember going the day after. went to bed at 7.30 but bloods were 13.8 after masses of walking that day.

Since ive been back i have had readings of up to 15.1 and felt fine just hot in the face.

I thought that 15 was still low as some people on here talk about readings in the 20's.

Thanks in advance and hope that you are ok now...

Diet yoghurts are less sugar.. more fat, you can't win!

Julie x

hi julie well i get very sweaty , i slurr my words and i start panicking , i just know when there coming oh as there so fast , i know people talk of 20,s as high yes but i was getting lovley readings of 12 for about a week so 15 to me is high .
like you say you cant win can you something has good levels for this then bad levels for that grrrr
