I only managed to get dinner at just gone 9pm as I finished work late. It was pasta bake. is that gonna affect the test if I don't eat from well...as soon as I finished eating to tomorrow morning after the test?

I've never had to have this done before so am a little worried. Plus the receptionist didn't even say how long i needed to fast for. I looked online and it said don't eat for 11-12 hours (its for cholesterol, renal profile and hba1c) so that should be ok surely?

Also what if I hypo during the night and have to eat something?

I would just be honest with them tomorrow so they can make a note of it. I'm sure there are occasions when people have to eat, such as hypos, as you suggest. But if you can avoid eating or drinking anything other than plain water from now on, you'll have a much more accurate reading.🙂

Prior to my diabetes, I have always been told not to eat anything after 9pm so you should be alright, I doubt they would be strict or find out if you ate at 9.15pm!!!

After diagnosis, I have never been asked for a fasting test, I presume for the reason you have mentioned hypos! I wouldn't have thought that if you did have a hypo that you would 'not' treat it!!! Maybe take a unit or 2 less than you normally would for your bake if you felt happier at not having a hypo but personally, I would treat the hypo as normal. Do you have hypostop or glucogel rather than packing away slow digesting carbs?

I think you will be fine for the test and fingers crossed you stay hypo free tonight! :D

I've had 2 or 3 in the past few years Suze. If you go hypo, you treat it as normal, but tell them before the test. They can then take it into account with the results or cancel it. But I would imagine they'd just go ahead.

Why do you have to fast? The guidelines were changed years ago regarding cholesterol,

Isn't the HbA1c fastign though ?

I've deffo had a couple of fasting tests before. The last one was in Feb for (I think) cholestorol and maybe liver function, etc.

They may well do it in these parts by divination involving toads and bat's intestines but it was deffo fasting.

typically i woke up hypo this morning and had to have jelly babies for breakfast. Not having anything else til after the test but still lol. Knew this would happen :/

I would say that, since you've had to treat a hypo, the pasta is irrelevant and you'll need to reschedule the test, unless they can take into account the fact that it's now non-fasting.

I was always informed that for fasting its from 10pm till 8/10am, and considering opening times for some test facilities, I find I tend to go slightly over that, with waiting times
