Hi Guys, Me again and my still trying to understand how things work.

Yesterday morning and this morning my bs on waking were 4.1

I had shredded wheat for breakfast both mornings with skimmed milk.

2 hrs after test yesterday 11.2, 2 hrs (3 hr 6.1) today 8.1 (forgot to do 3 hr today) (both to high in my opinion), but what I still don't understand is why the numbers are so different. I'm seeing my GP (diabetic DR) on the 9th Sept to look at medication.

Help

Hi Di, join the club, I'm sort of the opinion that the way your digestion works gives the variation from day to day. It's not helped with the Victoza I'm on, because that is supposed to work by delaying stomach emptying. Were you evening meals different the previous days? more fat maybe? You might have to rethink the Shredded wheat, I've stopped having breakfast cereal, it has too big an effect.

It could be due to differing activity levels on the previous day - you can be more insulin sensitive for 24 hours or more after a sustained period of exercise.

Thanks guys.

I just cant seem to win at the mo, brilliant numbers before breakfast and after eve meal.

I cant not eat breakfast and would end up fainting if I did. Cereal is quick and easy for me - dont have time for anything else (shower, hair & makeup unless I start going to work unmade and that aint gonna happen I'm to vain lol). Catch 22 - I'm trying the shredded wheat Northy!!

Need the exercise !!

The thing is if I inject Novo after breakfast (2 to 4 units depending) I have a hypo about 3 hrs after - so again tried that.

Hopefully GP will have some suggestions or answers for me - I will not let this D ruin my life - High BS scare the hell out of me and I dont want to end up poorly like my gran - who is in a really bad way from complications :(

You could try a yoghurt for brekky, maybe fire something on top of it..........yoghurt should not spike the BGs as bad.........

I have it in the morning for this reason and also just to get something inside me to let my liver know I have fueled up..........🙂

I tend to have natural yoghurt and nuts (usually walnuts or almonds) in the morning. Very low GI but still has some carbs in it and takes about 30s to put together.

Your stress levels can affect things Di as can your cycle.

Hope your Dr can help.

Hi Di, sounds like cereal is too high GI for you, it is for me too, I go high after eating it and then drop quickly later because it doesn't last. I know it is annoying to cook breakfast but I found eggs on toast was brilliant and I felt better too. If not try natural yoghurt or fromage frais with blueberries and nuts, it should be better than cereal. Could you experiment with cooking breakfast on days when you don't work and see if it helps at all?

Hi Natalie, I might have to try the yogurt - I like fat free natural or fat free Greek. I work Monday to Friday and have porridge Saturday and Sunday morning. I tend to cycle or run Sat / Sun morning and like the porridge for the energy,. I literally have an hour in the morning to get ready for work - I am lazy sod and cant get up - so no cooking for me during the week in the mornings and even hubby will not have time to cook for me, he already makes my lunch every morning.

Maybe I'm being a bit obsessive I don't know? Maybe I do need more meds? God I hate this illness at times!! I just feel like my D has progressed really fast and aggressively. I've done everything possible to make myself well and fit and alas it is still not enough :(

I don't want to end up like granny or mum. Granny the naughty girl was eating sausage and egg or bacon and egg every lunch time and I dread to think how much fat she was consuming. Neither granny or mum have been looking after themselves properly, Granny has been in and out of hospital for the past 5 weeks, even though we have now managed to get her into a home. Granny is now really ill and mum is making slow steps in sorting herself out.

I'm just tired of it all now - it is really getting me down :(

Di, I'm sorry to hear about your Mum and Gran. You're definitely not being obsessive, it is worth doing what you can to improve your levels and getting better control in the morning will give you more energy for the rest of the day. Definitely try the yoghurt and keep us posted on how you get on. I would try that before taking more meds because, as you said, taking more insulin gives you a hypo later which is not ideal. Lots of hugs xx

I suspect your problem is the time you inject your novo.
It's meant to be taken before eating so it's peek coinsides with the absorption of the food you are going to eat. 🙂 Can you not try another breakfast instead of cereals, there are very few people who can get away with low numbers after that amount/type of carbs in the morning.

I'm a Burgen toast convert for breakfast 🙂 Also I inject 15-45 mins before eating (depending on how long it takes me to realise I've injected and forgotten to eat 😉)

Not tried Burgen Toast - I'll give it a whirl. I'm usually eating breakfast 15 to 20 minutyes after I roll out of bed. I'm useless in the mornings - dont come alive until 9.00 when I hit the office and have to use what I have left of the grey matter lol.

I'm gonna give the yoghurt and fruit a try - will it be climbing the wall in hunger later in the morning ?? I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Hi, just trying out oatibix bites and oatibix flakes on Millie, she spikes too with some cereals and has been trial and error, she has low tolerance for any thing else on a morning so has been a challenge 🙄 these have only incresased her levels by 2 post brekkie reading so really pleased, might be worth a try ? Good luck, must be very frustrating for you 🙂

Are you able to have breakfast at work? I know this isn't an option for all people but I have the facility to have something at work and I take in the Oats-So-Simple and microwave it or some Burgen and have tea and toast! I also find that bananas are a quick fix breakfast for me if I'm out and about!!

Hope you find an alternative or your Dr has an option! As some have already said, I personally wouldn't have minded those figures after a meal, certainly not the 8 reading but I guess your personal experiences come into play with how and what you gauge as good control.

Thanks Suze. It is the double figure that scare me - my control was so good and now it all seems to have gone to pot. I feel the more I try the worse it is getting - I only managed 12 months in type 2 land before insulin and I know many type 2 can go years and years without needing it. (Ma & granny both had 10 years), I just want to be as well as possible etc.

We dont have any facilities at work to make toast etc which is a right pain in the bottom. But hey ho

I'll feed back what gp say next week and in the meantime - try differnt breakfasta and test test test lol xxx

I think its worth trying to say to yourself that everyone is different and whilst it is easy to compare to others, certainly those around you who have had it or others on here, everyone has different tolerances. I was caught up while on my DAFNE course that I was the one using the most insulin as I take 40u of Lantus and a ratio of 1.5u to every 10g of carbs. I just roll with it now...It may mean more meds or more insulin to get the control you desire. At least you have the right outlook in wanting the control in the first place!

How about those (relatively) new Belvita Breakfast bars? I haven't tried them and to be honest am wondering how a biscuit can be breakfast! Or some croissants and jam? (I am now going to be racking my brains for ideas for easy and quick breakfasts!!!)

Good luck for next week in the meantime and hope the last few readings have just been a blip, try not to worry...it may only raise the levels higher...

Thanks for these ideas ss well Suze x

I have wondered about those Belvita biscuits too - they advertise them as 'slow-release', but am wondering if that is a con, as with weetabix.

I've had them in the past. They taste ok but 1 pack has 4 biscuits (there are 6 packs per box I think) and I found if I opened a pack 2 should be enough for breakfast, but before I knew it I had scoffed the lot. If I remember right as well sugars are a bit high in them as well (can't remember exact figure) x
