The Big D has struck in my family again

My uncle, mums brother has just been diagnosed as Type 2. He has also basically been told to go away lose weight and eat healthy and go back and see his GP in 3 months for a blood test.......

I'm shaking my head in amazement.......

I told him to come see me, have a list of questions he want to ask and I'm gonna lend him one of my meter to use to test himself. I know exactly how bad he is feeling at the moment as my naughty BS are miss behaving and I feel like I did when I was diagnosed.

Yeah he's been pretty cool and hasn't panicked - he is surrounded by us fellow D's - I'm the information hub for everyone - but if we need anything we will give you a shout - as you can see the family of d's is expanding

Gran (his mum) Diagnosed 19 years ago aged 60)
Aunt (grans sister Diagnosed 3 years ago aged 77)
Mum (my mum & his Sister diagnosed 18 years aged 42)
Me (his niece diagnosed 3 1/2 years ago aged 35)

I'm completely selfish Caroline and it's all about me - this forum is like my little secret for help and tips etc!! I'm naughty and have to confess I have not even told mum about it. Maybe now I should and get uncle on it as well.

slap my hands and hang my head in shame - it my little world of D that I have not been able to involve the rest of my family in - like my own little place, even my hubby does not come on here

Sorry to hear about your uncles diagnosis Di. It does seem to be all too common these days that newly diagnosed people are sent away to sort themselves out and the condition itself 'played down' as not really serious.

I completely understand your reluctance about telling him about this place though. It's a place we can come and moan about stuff to people who understand. Sometimes that might mean we talk about stuff we wouldn't want our families to know. Let's face it, sometimes it's our families we moan about! A friends husband was recently diagnosed and I haven't told him about here either. I feel a bit mean but they're not the sort of friends I want knowing everything about me. XXXXXX

Get him some books from the library or buy him Diabetes for Dummies - depends on how well you get on with him!

Sorry to hear about uncles diagnosis, my unc is also diabetic and often sends me some supplies in the post if im running low.

Hi Di, sorry to hear about your Uncle's diagnosis It seems that there is growing evidence that there might just be a genetic element involved where your family is concerned...😉 It's good to hear that he is not panicking about it, and I know that, with your help, he will do a great job of learning how to manage it well. As Faith said, I quite understand if you want to keep us to yourself (so to speak!) - it may not be his kind of thing anyway. I hope things go smoothly for him and that he doesn't have to take on too many changes to his diet and lifestyle in order to achieve excellent levels 🙂

Sorry to hear this Di, with my father, mother both grand-mothers, and a great aunt T2 I know how you feel...
