I had my HBAiC results today and it was 6.3% 🙂 lower than my last ones so very happy but..... cholesterol is 5.6 even though i am taking 80mg simvastatin. My DN said that ideally it should be 5 or below for a diabetic but overall she is very pleased with my results. My BP is 'perfect' (her words), my weight has gone down from last time and my liver and kidney function is normal so feel that all my hard work going to the gym, healthy eating etc is paying off 🙂

Hi Carina. Well done on those results. The hard work is paying off. 🙂

Did they give you any advice on the cholestorol ?

You must be on the max statin dose, so I guess that's doing all it can. Maybe you're just genetically prone to having high cholestorol. The statins will be protecting in other ways, so it's not just a numbers game according to the medical research.

hello Robster. I said i wasn't happy about being on the highest dose of 80mg of simvastatin but she said that as i wasn't getting any side effects and because my liver and kidney function is good then i have to continue taking this dosage. I am hoping that by continuing with my gym workouts and losing weight it may carry on going down but i will make an appointment to see my GP to discuss this in more detail. I've never been aware of high cholesterol running in my family so not really sure why it is still high. At least it is better than it was which was over 9 when i was first diagnosed with it.

It may be that it just takes a long time for it to drop. As you say, it is much better than it was. 🙂

ALl I know is to cut out as much saturated fat as possible and try to include a certain amount of omega 3 from sources such as oily fish.

But I don't necessarily follow my own advice.🙄

What's the make-up of that Carina? - HDL, LDL, Trigs?

T2 Diabetics should be under 4. (NICE)

Here's a bazzing powerpoint presentation on Cholesterol. Technical but worth study.

http://www.dphhs.mt.gov/PHSD/cardio...gioFazioFutureofLDLTherapySummit2011FINAL.pdf

Slide 4 deals with LDl and Slide 5 with Total Cholesterol.
Slide 5 shows that non-diabetic men with Total Chol of 5 have a death rate from heart disease of 20 per thousand which jumps fourfold to 80 per 1000 for diabetic men. It begins to drop when diabetics get under 4 TC.
But still at 1 Total Cholesterol the death rate from heart dises is 40 per 1000 for diabetic men and only 5 for non-diabetics. Which just goes to show how crucial cholesterol issues are for us diabetics ( and how irresponsible some of the attacks on the "cholesterol hypothesis" and statins, that you read in the media really are.

Ominously the study shows that some are going to need several treatments , a statin and something else, to reach recommended target levels of ldl and total cholesterol.
The summary slide, No 31, is also worth digesting.

its worth noting that the LDL figures are in mg/dl not mmol/l. The slide on total cholesterol doesn't use any units. The subjects were divided up into 5 quintiles ie 5 groups from those with the highest total cholesterol to lowest. There was a distinctly lower risk for those in the group with the lowest total cholesterol but that even at the lowest level the risk was considerably greater in those with diabetes than those without.

70mg/dl = 1.8mmol/l
This is the figure the author wants as a target LDL for those at greater risk of CVD, My own doctors target is 80mg/dl so quite near to this. Unfortunately , if you only have a total cholesterol result you can't see what your LDL is.

100mg/dl = 2.58mmol/l, 200mg/dl = 5.17mmol/l

Well done on your brilliant results:D I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that your cholesterol will get even better

Well done Carina - keep up the good work and the cholesterol will improve I am sure.🙂

So McD - what are the relative figures for women then?

I don't believe you can say it shouldn't make a difference, because all the death rates from anything apply differently between the sexes.

I went to that site you suggested.
Looked at it for all of 5 seconds and pressed the back button.
You would need to have a degree in intergalactic cosmology to understand that.:D

Congratulations on the great results Carina! 🙂
